Review by CharleyX:

First of a 6 issue LS. Don't be fooled by the "1 of 3" on the cover - it's a mistake. Thankfully, that seems to be the extent of the errors in this mag - at least that I could find. As suspected by many after reading the blurb on Marvel.com, the visitor from space who kicks off this issue is none other than Prosh. That was the first thing I liked about this issue. With his history and connections to the First 5, Cable and X-Force, he was too good a character to just send off into space, never to be heard from again. As for his mission on Earth, I thought it a bit strange that he would have the vision and foresight to know which of today's mutants are pivotal to the survival of mankind, but then again, he did spend time 2000 years in the future and was for a long time hooked into a time machine. Besides, when you've been inside a Celestial, you're bound to see some interesting things. Anyway, there is one little issue I'm having - placing this LS in context of current issues. Obviously it takes place before X-Men #108, but Kelly's mutant-tolerant stance would seem to put it right around Uncanny #388, when we first saw that change. That doesn't leave a lot of time. Also, why wasn't Cable at Kelly's side, while Jean was in the crowd? And since when is Mystique part of Kelly's campaign? Wouldn't she have bumped into Cable by now? Anyway, it was nice to see Ruckus again. Wonder where Raven dug him up. I guess he should get a bio soon. Back in the main story, the inital contacts by Prosh were very interesting. He really knew how to get the Keys' attentions. I thought the confrontation with Toad was the most interesting. One of the nice things about Avengers Forever was that it clarified issues that had been raised about the physical exisitence of some characters, like Vision and the original Human Torch. It seems that this LS will try to do the same, as it does with Toad. Even more interesting is that Toad's biochemical fluctuations may also explain his current movie-style look as well (which puts this LS even earlier than UX #388, BTW). And like Avengers Forever (and the recent Maximum Security event) this story appears to deal with the issue of the fear of humanity spreading throughout the universe and supplanting everyone else, even the cosmic beings. That was very interesting. Unlike AF, this story seems to be dealing solely with the past, which is strange, since as observers none of the "team" can change what's already happened. The good thing is that we will probably get answers to many of the dangling questions that have been left in the wakes of writers' exits and book cancellation. One of the biggest is set up at the end of this issue - who really killed Graydon Creed? I'm really excited to see that. THe other really nice thing about this LS is that each issue is supposed to have a bibliography on the inside back cover that gives all the references found in the issue. I think that's great, especially for people who don't know every iota of X-Men history. It also means that this LS should be completely consistent with X-Men history, because they're obviously looking at the back issues. And another piece of frosting on this cake is the art. Very clean and with good facial expressions, among other things. I really loved the design for Prosh's ship as it stood next to the mountain. Very alien, yet Egyptian in some ways, revealing the great influence that Apocalypse had on him in the millennia that the High Lord possessed Ship. All in all, a good start to what could really be the X-Men event of the year!
