"Assault on Weapon Plus, Part 4"
Synopsis & Review by Dwain "HulkX" Smith: Thanks! Meanwhile E.V.A. is attacked. Fantomex reels in pain before switching to a back-up nervous system. He and Cyclops go to save E.V.A., while Logan, almost in a trance, stays in front of the computer monitors. Cyke and Fantomex come upon a War Room of sorts where the various Weapon Plus super-soldiers were to meet and plan mutant extermination. They are meant to be a genetic cleansing operation cleverly marketed as a comic-book super hero team called the Super-Sentinels. The Weapon Plus director shows up, mocks Fantomex for awhile, and apparently explodes E.V.A. The director reveals that a mole within the Xavier Institute has noted a new mutant buildup and threat and that within two weeks the Super-Sentinel will be in full war with mutantkind. Meanwhile XV has found Logan and wants to know the purpose of life. Logan tells him that some people were just born and raised to kill and that is all they are good for. With that he flips the switch and blows up the whole space station. Review: A real interesting issue, though it didn’t provide the kind of resolution I was looking for. However, I think Morrison’s next arc is his last and will probably tie up a lot of loose ends. One bit of information that wasn’t very clear was the identity of the Weapon Plus director. XV, or Ultimaton (Which is was wondering, is pronounced more like Ultimatum, or Automaton, as the word association could provide very different connotations to his purpose) anyways, XV says that Doctor Sublime tells him his mission is to destroy mutation. As in, U-Men Doctor Sublime? I honestly can’t remember if he died or not in Germ Free Generation, I’ll have to go back and look, as I remember him falling from a height of some sort after kidnapping Cyke and Emma. It would make a lot of sense if the U-Men and Weapon Plus movements were linked as they both share a love of wet-wiring technological and biological (i.e. mutant) parts together for anti-mutant purposes. But if that was Sublime, why didn’t Cyke recognize the guy? This needs further explanation. Is E.V.A. dead, and if so, what state does that leave Fantomex in? This guy screams LS in the future. The whole super-sentinel idea on a whole is very clever, especially with the mass marketing concerns. I wonder how much of it will survive the explosion. Finally, there is another traitor in the X-Mansion. Bishop’s future is still possible. Just kidding. Maybe. I take it this traitor had something to do with Emma’s murder. Speaking of Emma. As much as enjoyed this arc, I’ll be much happier next month when hopefully Emma, Beast, and Jean return to the pages of New X-Men. Bachalo’s art, as always is neat, though I have this feeling if anyone that wasn’t him was drawing like he does I wouldn’t like it. His art brings me a lot of good memories to his past work, specifically some classic Generation X stuff. Overall, I give this issue 4 out of 5 smashes.
