X-Man #1
Synopsis by Jeff Harris:Nate Grey, a young and immensely powerful psionic mutant, pushes himself into a psychic memory recall, and he remembers his encounter with Cyclops in the pits where the prelate promised to save him, but in his fear Nate blew a hole in the wall and escaped on his own. He then travels in his astral form to Xavier's Mansion, which he doesn't recognize but still can feel the power of the place. He finds Bishop and Magneto arguing and tries to enter the conversation, but his mentor Forge arrives and pulls him out of it. When he "awakens" he discovers all the area of woodlands around him destroyed inadvertently by his telekinetic powers, and leaves with his friends, Toad, Soaron, Brute, Mastermind, and of course Forge to put on a show. The group is acting as a theater troupe while subversively performing acts of heroism by destroying some of Apocalypse's factories and transport systems. After the show is over, Forge is confronted by an unknown Prelate and Mr. Cotter who believe they are mutants, despite Mastermind's illusions, and it takes Nate's power to turn them around and send them on their way. Forge is angry at Nate for his overreliance on his powers and they argue over it, and Forge reveals his fear that Apocalypse is aware of Nate's presence, which indeed he is. In New York, Cyclops informs En Sabah Nur of Sinister's departure and supposed betrayal, while Shadow King reveals the presence of a powerful telepathic mutant in the Midwest. Cyclops departs, plotting how he could use the mutant for his own purposes, while Apocalypse calls on Domino to find Nate and either recruit him, or if he is unwilling, to kill him. In the Kansas Prairies, a ton of Infinites arrive to cart off more humans, and in the process, the caretaker of a girl named Theresa (perhaps Black Tom?) is killed and Theresa is captured. Soaron flies through and stops the train with a bomb, and the others release the humans, but are ambushed by yet more Infinites. Nate intervenes on behalf of the humans, and Theresa sees he's in danger, which somehow results in the unleashing of her latent mutant sonic scream. Against Forge's wishes, Nate insists on bringing the girl with them, and the group leaves. Later that evening, they are met on the road by a mysterious man who offers his services and calls himself... Essex.
