"Vendetta, Part 5: Payback"
by Marc Guggenheim & Humberto Ramos

Part of the Civil War X-Over

Synopsis & Review by Sean Mills. Thanks!:
Synopsis: In the present day, Wolverine is fighting some armored soldiers. One week ago, he went to visit Damage Control headquarters in New York City, CEO Walter Declun especially. After playing tough guy to get past reception, he meets with Ann-Marie Hoag, the President of Damage Control. Wolverine explains that Declun gave Nitro mutant growth hormone, boosting his explosive powers and leading to the Stamford Incident. Hoag is a bit shocked and explains that when she took the company public, Declun and his investors bought a controlling share of the stock. From there, he muscled his way to CEO. Before she can continue, Declun interrupts and tells Logan to leave like a smarmy ass. Wolverine agrees, but he's left something behind.

A few days later, he goes back to retrieve what he left behind, realizing that Declun is only part of a larger monster, these 'investors.' Wolverine takes his little box back to its maker, Forge, who explains that it is a digital recording device that tapped into Declun's computer and phone system. Once he deciphers the information, Forge explains that Damage Control has been beefing up super villains for a long time. More superhuman battles means more property for Damage Control to clean up means more money. They're war profiteers, and have received big government contracts in the wake of Civil War from reconstruction to training and evaluation of registered heroes. Logan asks Forge where to hit, and Forge says that a corporation can't be hit the way Logan is used to. Logan disagrees and knows that there's only one way to take anything down: cut on it until there's nothing left.

So Logan begins traveling around to different Damage Control holding firms, taking out machinery and bank accounts. Back at the Xavier Mansion, Scott Summers and Emma Frost confront Logan again, with mostly Emma and Logan trading empty threats. Scott tries to be the clear head, and lists a large number of laws that Logan has broken in this quest of his. Then Scott explains that as both headmaster of the school and leader of the X-Men, Logan should listen to him. Logan counters by revealing to Scott that Emma and Iron Man used to knock boots back in the day, as revealed in an issue of Civil War. The look on Emma's face is priceless, and Logan tells the two heads of Xavier's that if he'd listened to them and stayed out of it then Nitro would still be on the loose and nobody would know of Damage Control's involvement. Nobody would know if he had followed orders because Scott and Emma were scared of offending the humans, scared of getting involved, which is funny, because Logan was sure the whole point of putting on the spandex and playing superhero was to get involved. He ends his speech by saying those orders would make Jean Grey roll over in her grave.

Wolverine begins his attack on Declun's holdings, only to have the CEO respond by purchasing the Roxxon Corporation's long island offices. Logan invades there as well, because it would be a damn shame to have Declun set up a trap and Wolverine not trip it. It's there that he meets the armored soldiers from the very beginning. Engaging in a fight, Wolverine learns that not only does Damage Control clean up after a big superhuman brawl, they also steal some of the leftovers. One of the soldiers gets Wolverine in a headlock and reveals that he has one of Whirlwind's spinning blades on his forearm guantlet. Not only that, but the whirling buzz saw is made out of adamantium...and he begins to cut into Logan's neck!

Review: This was a nice set-up for the story arc's conclusion. We finally meet the enemy, and he's as arrogant and prickish as we could have imagined. The art goes a long way in showing off just how much of a snot Declun is. It's also rather fun to see him try to beat Wolverine like a businessman would, only to have Wolvie just cut his way through that crap. I'm not worried about Wolverine at all in that last panel, but it's still an okay cliffhanger. Just looking forward to justice being served to Declun. He is also mysterious enough to pose a possible threat, though it takes the emphasis away from Damage Control. They would have made a nice villain, but it turns out the villain just sort of took over their name in order to enact his evil schemes. Takes the punch away, at least a little. Wolverine's scenes with the receptionist and the old president are fun.

The X-Men make two cameos in this story. One is good, the other horribly forced. Forge would be great as Logan's gadget guy, as he was with Mystique, so it's fun seeing Logan pay him a visit. The Emma and Scott scene was just bad, especially Logan jumping on that throwaway line from Millar's Civil War about Iron Man and Emma Frost. That was just an ugly idea to begin with and here Logan twists the knife for pure shock value. Not cool at all, especially since he then gives Cyclops and Emma a nice big speech about getting involved. It's not their fault the X-Men are not getting involved in Civil War, it was an editorial decision. Oh well, at least Logan was checking in with the X-Men.

The art is still great, I'm not bothered at all by Logan's thick neck. It serves the character to have the violence at sort of wild cartoony style.
