"Vendetta, Part 3"
by Marc Guggenheim & Humberto Ramos

Part of the Civil War X-Over

Synopsis & Review by Sean Mills. Thanks!:
Synopsis: Naked and angry, Logan beats the crap out of Nitro in the woods of Big Sur, California. The guy just blew up a squad of heavily-armed soldiers and fried Logan to the bone, but somehow he healed back up and is on the rampage. He's figured that since Nitro isn't hurt in the explosions, all Wolverine has to do is get in close and he'll be okay. The suburban couple and Janus are nearby, hiding in the foliage and reporting to their boss that a third-party, Logan, has entered the picture. They peg Wolverine for an enemy and their boss says to kill him if he gets in the way. The boss is en route.

With Wolverine holding him, Nitro asks if Wolverine plans to kill him even if he's one of the good guys. Logan says that all the good guys are working for the government, and everyone else is breaking the law. But no, Wolverine isn't going to kill Nitro. He's going to beat on Nitro for another few hours, then maybe move on to the cutting. In a panic, Nitro reveals that he knows someone else, he has a name. It's not like he's ever had the kind of power to blow up Stamford before. Wolverine is intrigued. Nitro reveals that he's been taking Mutant Growth Hormone, which is like super power steroids for people with powers. But he's not buying it, he's getting the MGH for free. Wolverine believes him and lets him go, he wants to hear more. Nitro is about to give a name when someone interrupts.

Janus shows up and tackles Wolverine. The Canuck mentions how it's rude to interrupt a conversation as he fights back. The two exchange blows until the suburban wife yells for it to stop. Her 'husband' has Nitro pinned and she says they have no quarrel with Wolverine. They just want to take Nitro, and Wolverine puts some of the pieces together. Nitro said the plan was bigger than him, and now some strange, powered people want him. Gritting his teeth, Logan says no can do. Janus tackles him again. As they fight, Nitro gets the upperhand on Paul, the 'husband', and steals his fancy circular knife.

In some swanky office building, two men in suits are chatting. They're in a cubicle farm and look a little nerdy as they discuss the Stamford fallout. One of the men is the one who spoke to Nitro on the phone last issue. He calls Nitro one of their 'rainmakers' and says that he cut Nitro loose, but not to worry, this won't be traced back to them. On the side of the panel, the corner of their 'logo' can be seen...a big clue to who might be behind everything if you recognize the logo.

Wolverine manages to get the upper hand on Janus while the blonde woman asks him if Nitro is worth dying for. Logan's resigned himself to the deal he's made to answers, but Nitro jumps him from behind. He puts his arm around Logan's neck and holds the blade to his head, ready to get his own payback. The blonde says that they only want justice, but is speechless when Logan asks if they want justice for Stamford. Nitro snarls in his ear about being ignored and says he might just 'move on to the cutting.' Logan throws him off his back, mentioning how it's rude to interrupt a conversation.

Caught in a standoff, Logan demands answers. Janus says his strength is his birthright, that it comes from their home. Janus injects himself and puts on a breather masks as he reveals himself to be from Atlantis. The trio are there for justice because Nitro murdered a member of their royal family: Namorita. When Logan asks who ordered their attack, the boss shows himself.

It's Namor, the Sub-Mariner!

Review: All the answers are falling into place and the action rachets up another notch. Guggenheim really delivers with that spark of excitement throughout, with little touches of comedy and action. The big reveal about them being from Atlantis is one of those slap-your-forehead moments. Nobody stopped to consider the rest of the New Warriors back in Civil War #1. Despite Namorita's low profile, their actions make perfect sense. Although why Namor and Wolverine are going to fight, I don't know. You'd think the Atlanteans would also be interested in finding out who was behind Stamford. But I digress. I can't wait for the next issue, but more so for the story than the big fight. Hopefully that'll just be a tiny part while the rest is revealed. I had to do some research on that logo, but I won't spoil it for any readers. It makes a fun kind of sense in the bigger picture, but it's not that huge.

Art was again stellar, even if Wolverine was naked for the whole issue. Ramos' Logan is not as good as his Wolverine, but it still works nicely. All of the characters are wonderfully rendered and Janus does look like he could be a hassle. The couple actually do look like suburbanites. Ramos also draws good carnage, from bloody moments to just punching around. Nitro really does look like hell after Logan's pummeling.
