Final Sanction, Part 1: "Full Shred Trash"

by Larry Hama & Adam Kubert
Part 8 of "The Phalanx Covenant"

Summary by Niki. Thanks!:
Newlyweds Cyclops and Phoenix are on a plane and on their way to Muir Island to meet with Professor X when upon entering Muir airspace, they are attacked by the Phalanx who had attacked Excalibur earlier. A battle ensues and Wolverine's parachuting entrance turns the tide of battle to the X-Men's side. One of the attacking Phalanx retreats to share data with Steven Lang, who's trying to assimilate Psylocke into their consciousness without success. Secretly, however, she is given an override by Lang, who seems to have other plans in mind which the Phalanx might know, had a telepathic link been allowed. Meanwhile, the battle is still raging on Muir when Cable drops in and joins the fight. He helps end the battle. Professor X had telepathically sent Cable and Wolverine to find the missing X-Men, while the newlyweds just unexpectedly become part of the mission. During the battle, Jean was able to read one of the Phalanx's mind, thereby knowing who and what they are and what their plan is - to absorb all information from the research center's databanks about mutants and use it for their own advantage. The four mutants need that information as well to locate the missing X-Men. However, the computers were shut down before Excalibur left. Cable devises a plan: with Jean's powerful telepathy and his limited TP to back her up, they will distract the Phalanx in the astral plane while Cyclops and Wolverine infiltrate the center and get the information they need. The plan commenced but almost failed when a memory pattern from Cable's time in the future with Redd emerged from Jean which somehow distracted him and shunted him out of the plane. While Wolverine and Cyclops come out of the center with the info they need, a Phalanx entity attacks them. Cable volunteers to keep it there while the other three jump on an airplane and go to the Himalayas. Cable is losing the battle until Wolverine saves him and the two join Cyke and Jean to rescue the X-Men.

Synopsis & Review by Nick Summers:
Synopsis: Cyclops and Jean Grey are in the Blackbird and on their way towards Muir Island, but are surrounded by several Phalanx creatures. They land and start fighting and Jean realizes something happend with Xavier and Excalibur. Meanwhile, Wolverine and Harry Tabeshaw are also nearby and as Logan hears the fighting he rushes in of course. He flies toward some Phalanx and kills one, but then again also gets caught by another one and testosterones all over the place. Cyclops and Jean notice Logan in the fight, Scott uses his beam to defeat the Phalanx creature and Wolverine is released. He briefly meets up with them and then starts fighting again. Meanwhile at the Phalanx HQ (meaning Moira's lab), they are trying to take over Psylocke's mind and body and she tries to resist for as long as she can. Back to the three fighting X-Men, they get the unexpected help from Cable, who says to have been contacted by Xavier. Logan says the same goes for him, but he gets suspicious but Jean says Cable is the real deal.

Cable then gets flashbacks about the Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix LS but hesitates about saying something about it, and they begin making plans. The Phalanx realize the X-Men are on their way and also begin planning. Cable and Jean telepathically run into the Phalanx minds, while Cyclops and Wolverine attack their base. Cable and Jean have the most difficult time as Cable keeps getting more flashbacks but gets together later on, but still doesn't say anything. With Scott and Logan, they are attacked by the escaping Cyber who's holding cell seems to have had its best time. He attacks Logan but Cyclops rushes in and defeats Cyber with ease. Cable and Jean defeat their share of Phalanx creatures, while Scott and Logan make it outside.

Cable then gets caught by the Phalanx, Logan says Jean and Scott to go into the plane with Harry while he does his job in rescuing Cable and does. Cable then opens full fire at Moira's lab and it in a whole including all the present Phalanx are defeated and killed. In the plane, Scott and Jean nurse Cable, where Logan also says sorry for not being present at their wedding, but Jean says he was their in heart and that's what counts. Logan then goes over to Harry and says he doesn't need to feel sorry as he'll get him another plane from Xavier, and says to set course towards Tibet!

Review: Well, despite this being more of an X-Men/Cable issue than it was a Wolverine story as it should be, Larry does his best to give all the characters the attention they need, including by not forgetting Wolverine. He does a great job on writing Scott and Jean, including Nathan, and has obviously read the Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix LS from a while back, or talked in by Marvel. Any way possible, he gets it into the story. Though oftenly it gets a little too much, I'm glad that at least he brought it in. Adam also returns, so it's back up with the art. As from now on, Wolverine is once more back a member of the X-Men, as he should be.
