Wind Dancer

Full Name: Sofia Mantega (Barrett)
Affiliation: None
Previous Affiliations: "New Mutants" Squad (Xavier's student body)
Status: De-powered
Relatives: William Barrett (father), Miranda (mother, deceased)
Powers & History: Wind manipulation, allowing her to fly as well as to hear sounds distances away. Sofia lived happily in Venezuela until her mother was killed in a riot and she was sent to live with her father. Though he despised her, mostly due to her illegitimacy, she found friendship in his aide, Derek. After being forgotten on her birthday, Sofia’s bright demeanor cracked and she used her powers to heavily damage one of her father’s super-marts and was jailed. Dani Moonstar arrived and prevented her from being sent back to Venezuela, bringing her instead to Charles Xavier’s school. She was roomed with Laurie Collins, whom she immediately befriended. Sofia was the first student to successfully room with Laurie, as her wind powers were able to keep Laurie's pheromones at bay.

On a trip to New York to see Derek, Sofia and her friends were attacked by the Reavers, who kidnapped her father. The students managed to defeat them, and Derek quit his job, rather than let Barrett mistreat his daughter. Sofia met with Derek again on Parent’s Day, but when her father also arrived, she told them off, thinking she was being used so Derek could get his job back. After helping Josh Foley and Wolfsbane rescue Noriko Ashida from Salem Center, she regretted her actions, but found Derek waiting for her in her room.

Soon after being assigned to the New Mutants squad under Dani Moonstar, Sofia was named the leader, although some in the group felt that Prodigy III was better suited for the role, given his ability to absorb knowledge. In fact, after Sofia's emotional outbursts cost the squad a few rounds of competition, she willingly offered to share the leader's position with David, which worked much better. While the New Mutants appeared to loathe their rivals the Hellions (Emma's squad), in fact Sofia became very attracted to (Julian Keller) Hellion, her opposite number. They even went to the spring dance together.

Following M-Day, however, Sofia was de-powered, and while Julian wanted to keep seeing her, she was turned off by his attitude towards the other ex-mutants, and his support of Emma's decision to send them home. Sofia apparently was picked up from the school, and was not on the bus that was bombed by Stryker.
