Affiliation: NoneWendigo I was a hunter named Paul Cartier who was trapped with his friends by a pack of wolves. One of the party died,, and faced with starvation, Cartier ate from his body, becoming the Wendigo. Wolverine faced Wendigo while on assignment for the Canadian government (pre-X-Men). He was sent to deal with the Hulk but found his quarry fighting with the Wendigo. The three fought, and Wolverine and the Hulk managed to knock Wendigo unconscious. However, before it woke, the Wendigo curse was removed from Cartier by his sister. She had intended to transfer the curse to the Hulk, but her magic spell backfired. Instead, it shifted to Cartier's best friend, who became . . .
Wendigo II. Georges Baptiste had come with Cartier's sister Marie to save his friend, but got the curse himself. As Wendigo, he attacked the Parnall family, killing the father Joe, and capturing the mother, Eileen. Their boy Tommy ran for days until he reached the mounties, but was traumatized by what he had seen. The case came to the attention of Alpha Flight, who were joined by Wolverine and Nightcrawler, on vacation from the X-Men. Pooling their resources, the heroes managed to save Elieen and subdue the Wendigo so that Shaman could reverse the ancient curse. Baptiste was arrested and taken away.
Wendigo III was thought to have killed young boys in Canada, but Wolverine and Spider-Man discovered that the chief of police in the town was the true criminal. This Wendigo seemed peaceful and just wanted to be left alone.
Wendigo IV was a headmaster in Wisconsin who was chopping firewood when the groung gave way beneath him. He fell into a cavern and was crushed by a falling log. In addition, the axe he had been holding fell and chopped off the ring finger and pinky of his left hand. Dying from starvation and loss of blood, he decided to eat his severed fingers in the hope that this would provide him with enough strength to await a rescue. Ironically, it did save him, but turning him into the Wendigo, which had enough strength to get above ground again. While hunting, it caught the scent of its old enemy Wolverine, and attacked him in the Weapon X facility. Wolverine escaped, but was badly injured. However, Logan finally beat the Wendigo back when it attacked the young boy who had helped him recover. The Wendigo was severely burned and ran off.
Wendigo V was a man named Larry who killed a friend of Marlo Jones's (wife of perennial sidekick Rick Jones) named Lorraine and drank her blood. Marlo was tracked down by Captain Marvel (who was bonded to Rick) and they fought, involving the Hulk at the same time. Marlo eventually pulled an earring from Wendigo's ear, and he returned to normal, but his consciousness was transferred to the mind of a fish.
NOTE: This is NOT normal Wendigo behavior.
Another Wendigo (unknown if Wendigo IV or not) was summoned and eaten by the French sorcerer Mauvais, who became Wendigo himself, as part of a bid to claim Canada as his realm. Fortunately he was thwarted by Alpha Flight and Wolverine and he was trapped in the dimension of the Great Beasts.
