Uncanny X-Men #388
Part 1 of "Dream's End"
Part 2 || Part 3 || Part 4

Review by CharleyX:
I really liked this issue. Having Kelly's speech frame the story was good, as it allowed time to think (and wonder) about what he was saying. The scenes running through all the teams and at the Mansion were great. Also good to see Magneto's comments. It's even more interesting now, since he is a head of state on par with Kelly (should he win). Also, Jubilee's comment on the fact that if it was any other minority other than mutants, no one would let Kelly get away with it was perfect. At the Mansion, I'm actually glad Professor X is back, as there are so many team members who need training, both in their powers and in other areas. Bishop's performance in the Danger Room training session is a case in point. Same goes for Rogue's control problems. More on that later. In the Mansion, I also loved the conversation between Cable and Jean, especially the end, with Jean not being allowed into the Men's Locker. Funny little piece of NORMAL life that is always good to see. Now for Rogue: her control problems are even more intriguing now that she has absorbed shape-shifting abilities. That Wolverine was the one to track her and work with her was just right, given their past experiences together. Some very cool sequences of Rogue manifesting all the different powers of people she's absorbed over the years. On the flip side is the new Brotherhood. Sabretooth looked great, and I'm even getting used to the new-look Toad. Perhaps the High Evolutionary's "re-boot" of everyone genome can account for his "improvements." Hitting one of the Lords Cardinal was a gutsy move, even for Mystique. Also, I realize that bringing Creed and Toad in to work with Mystique is meant to parallel the movie, but at least her cold-blooded murder schemes fit well with Creed's usual MO. Custom-engineering a variant of the Legacy Virus is also gutsy, and a little out of the Brotherhood's normal range of capbilities, no? Unless Mystique stole it from Muir Island when she was last there. Anyway, the end got a little muddy as the viewpoints switched between Boston and Muir. I wasn't quite sure what blew up, though it was probably Muir. Moira and Rahne should be coming to the States now, I'd guess. Other good things: confirmation of Cable's insertion into Kelly's campaign (shown a few months ago), and seeing Rahne again. Hope she didn't blow up. Finally, the last scene of Kelly's speech made it sound like he was completely reversing his trend! He almost seemed to be saying that while mutants can be inherently dangerous, we must learn to live together! Could it be? Could he have built up a campaign on anti-mutant fears and at the last moment turn it around so that when elected he could put plans into place to truly ensure safety and integration for mutants? Kind of like Nixon going to China - could it work? That bombshell was almost overshadowed by the bomb at the end of the page. Wonder where it will go. If this is the Dream's End, is it because Kelly lives - or because he dies?
