"Burn"
by Chris Claremont and Mark Silvestri

Synopsis & Review by Cihndar:
Synopsis: Wolverine is kissing Jean Grey. The X-Men and X-Factor stand in Central Park as Wolverine holds Jean. Cyclops tells Wolverine to let her go. Logan replies that Scott has a woman already, but he can have Jean if he can take her from him. Jean blasts Wolverine. She too is under the impression that the X-Men are dead, so she's unsure if these people are demons or if the X-Men have changed. Jean tells Iceman and Beast to get the Goblin Queen. The two go after Madelyne, but Havok blast the iceslide. Havok and the other X-Men believe the X-Factor are traitors who hunt mutants for money. Iceman tries to explain the X-Factor smokescreen, but Havok won't buy it. Wolverine says there's no denying the reputation the X-Factor has and there's no denying that Jean enjoyed that kiss. Warren yells at Wolverine in Jean's defense. As the runt charges Warren, Angel fires metal darts from his wings. Wolverine is stunned so Warren strikes him. Rogues tries to absorb Warren's power, but she begins to feel Apocalypse and Warren shoves her off. Cyclops blasts Rogue and Iceman makes a barrier between the two groups. Havok melts the ice, creating a flood.

Dazzler whines about the water messing up her skin and her outfit. Longshot tackles her. She is furious until she sees the black glow in his eye. Longshot gives her a deep kiss..

Scott tries to help Madelyne out of the water. She seems reasonable but she is still mad at Scott for leaving her. Havok is furious with his brother for breaking his vows. N'astirh appears and strikes Scott and Alex down as Jean's parents attack her. Longshot and Dazzler see Jean in trouble, but could care less. N'astirh rides toward Madelyne in a demonic coach. Madelyne says that it's time for Scott to chose. Cyclops blasts the demons off of Jean and N'astirh sweeps up Madelyne. Havok, desperate to save her, grabs on to the coach. Cyclops yells at Havok for preventing him from getting a disabling shot on the coach. He checks on Jean. She's upset and doesn't understand why Longshot and Dazzler wouldn't aid her. They don't know if these are the X-Men or demon copies, but they do know that these people have sided with Madelyne.

Havok hangs on as the coach flies through a demon infested city. They stop at the Empire State Building and Madelyne is in her Goblin Queen outfit. Alex realizes that Scott and Jean were right, but decides it doesn't matter. His outfit mimics hers and she calls him her Goblin Prince. Colossus yells at the two as they enter the building, but they won't listen. A gate, like a row of fangs, shuts behind them and N'astirh taunts Colossus. Determined, Colossus begins to climb.

Iceman and Longshot fight. Rogue uses a tree to bat a rock that Beast threw back at him. Jean fights Psylocke, Iceman keeps Wolverine busy, and Longshot and Dazzler tackle Cyclops, telling him to say "uncle." Warren tackles Wolverine, the two roll and fight.

Storm watches the fight from above. She sees the Empire State Building and remember how Forge teleported them home from a summit. She wonders why she would remember that at that moment.

N'astirh is worried about the preparations. If the sacrifice isn't complete by dawn then all reverts back to normal. The Goblin Queen rebukes him, snaps her fingers, and creates an altar. N'astirh is obviously amazed by her power as Dr. and Mrs. Grey bring the child. Madelyne marvels over her son, while below Jean senses that Nathan in the tower. The Goblin Queen sensed the communication and she's furious that her son called out to Jean. Jean has taken everything from her, even her son. N'astirh says that there's not enough room in the world for both women and the Goblin Queen wants Jean's life and soul.

A windgust pulls Jean away from a battle with Rogue. Jean and Storm have their reunion, but it is interrupted by N'astirh trying to fetch Jean for Madelyne. Warren tries to hit the demon, but the darts go through him and hit the two X-Women instead. Rogue catches them before N'astirh can. She tosses them; Warren catches Jean, and Beast does the same for Storm. N'astirh attacks Rogue, but she starts to absorb him.

Colossus finally reaches the altar and the Goblin Queen blasts him. Iceman uses a slide to redirect the metal X-Man. Colossus nails N'astirh in the back. The demon is weakened by Colossus' touch.

The two teams finally join forces. Psylocke telepathically briefs the X-Factor on techno-organic beings and Beast forms a plan.

Jean lifts Colossus, and Scott and Storm use their powers to boost him up. Warren pulls a fastball special. Colossus punches through the altar but is caught by the demon building. Acid begins to burn his skin. Wolverine rips into N'astirh. Warren holds Dazzler as she cuts Colossus free with a photon beam. As the group gets clear, Iceman freezes N'astirh. He encase the entire building in ice, but N'astirh loves it. The electric current of his cells are working at hyperspeed. He's processing information faster than ever.

When Storm finishes summoning the heatwave, Cyclops, Dazzler, and Colossus shatter the ice. The extreme temperature change is too much for N'astirh. Storm electrocutes N'astirh causing his circuits to overload. Finally the demon explodes.

The X-Men celebrate their victory, but the X-Factor members are wary. N'astirh is gone, but the city is till possessed and there is no sign of Nathan. Cyclops and Storm argue over the outcome. Jean sides with Scott, saying that the victory against evil should not cost one to become heartless. Just then an energy lasso wraps around Jean's neck and she's pulled away. The Goblin Queen, Havok, and the two demons have Nathan and Jean, and they are ready to fight.

Review: I guess for this one I'll start at the beginning and work my way though. The kiss, it's one Hell of a way of verifying that Jean is real.

The fight between the old team and the new. Either a lot of people want to see it happen, or Marvel thinks everyone wants to see it. To be fair to Inferno though, this was the first time it happened (as far as I know, at least. Well, there was Uncanny 100 and 106, but that was different).

I guess Scott clearly made his choice. Though he wanted to save them both, he did rescue Jean first.

Havok's outfit matching the Goblin Queen's was a nice touch. Makes me wonder if they didn't have that in mind when they designed her.

Colossus: that's determination. Although it's pretty bad that he was knocked down right after he reached the top.

It was good to see them all pull together to take down N'astirh, but I still don't get Colossus and Wolverine's purpose. I guess they were just a diversion. Still, how did the Goblin Queen and company take cover during all that? Oh well.

My big question is: how well does Storm and Jean really know each other? Uncanny 94 was right after the new team formed, and the old team left at the beginning of that issue. Granted, Jean probably didn't go far so she could be around Scott, but 101 was when Phoenix made her appearance. And to be knit-picky, Jean was captured by Sentinels in 98. How much time actually passed in those issues? Did Jean and Storm actually get a chance to get really close during that time. Yet in Inferno they're like close friends. Once again, I'm being anal.

The art: great. I still love how the X-Men lock during all this. Favorite shots: Wolverine kissing Jean, Havok's eyes when he's yelling at Cyclops, N'astirh's face when he talks of the sacrifice, and the cliffhanger panel.
