Summary by CharleyX:
New York: Kate Pryde picks her way through the ruined slums of Park Avenue, wishing Logan had picked a safer place to meet. The year is 2013. Kate proceeds carefully, but still falls through a hidden trap door. She lands in front of three rogue humans, who hate the ruling Sentinels almost as much as they hate muties, and so don't fall for a fabricated excuse of "official business." They attack, and Kate kicks the leader in the stomach, her inhibitor collar preventing her from phasing. He orders the other two to grab her, but Logan enters and warns them off. The leader pulls a blade, but Logan takes him down without even popping his claws. "Colonel Logan" of the Canadian Resistance Army helps Kate up and out, and reports the news that London will launch a full nuclear strike the moment that the Sentinels move out of North America. He gives Kate a jammer, the final component she needs for an upcoming operation, then confirms the breakout time and leaves.

Kate rides back on a horse-drawn bus, the M on her back drawing stares from the humans with H's on theirs, even from the anomalous A's. Kate returns to the camp and explains her delay to the guard Sentinel (omitting the parts about Logan, of course), then submits to a strip and cavity search intended more for degredation than for security. She walks by the rows of graves of friends, allies and enemies and vows to try to ensure this nightmare never begins!

Kate meets up with the rest of the anti-Sentinel resistance, also interned in the camp: Storm, Colossus, Franklin Richards and his lady Rachel, a telepath/telekinetic. Kate relays Logan's message, and the group is joined by Magneto, who is crippled and in a wheelchair, yet still exudes power and confidence. He allays Peter's doubts about their plan, for if they fail, the world will end in less than two days. He turns to Rachel, who says that she can start as soon as the jammer is online. Kate wants to get started, but her husband stops her. Peter wonders if what they intend to do will affect their love. Kate can't weigh her wants against the world's survival, and says if their love was meant to be, it will be. They embrace and plan to move forward with the plan, to safeguard their family and friends, and those yet unborn.

Later, Franklin adjusts the jammer and activates it, making the inhibitor collars they all wear malfunction. They remove the collar and Kate lays down, witrh Rachel sitting at her head, using her power to put Kate into a trance and begin her part of the plan...

The present. Kitty Pryde, the newest X-Man, walks into the Danger Room in the middle of a full-out training session for the X-Men. The team scrambles to keep her out of harm's way, which only increases the difficulty level. Storm sweeps Kitty away from danger with a gust of wind, right into the arms of Colossus, who returns to human form in order not to hurt Kitty. They are about to be smashed by a giant piledriver when Nightcrawler teleports to the abort switch and punches it. Storm is stern with Kitty for disobeying the rules of the Danger Room, but Kurt thinks she was just eager to get on with her own first run through the room.

Soon, the room is reprogrammed for Kitty. Her goal is simply to walk to the door at the other end of the room. Kitty takes a deep breath, closes her eyes and walks across the room. She is phased the whole way, so flying cushions, cables and a padded smasher have no effect on her. She doesn't even fall into the trap door that opens, as her phasing allows her to actually walk on the air molecules. The X-Men in the control booth laugh hysterically at the ease with which Kitty has defeated the scenario Xavier spent weeks programming. Kitty then reaches the door, but is suddenly struck down by an unknown force.

Nightcrawler teleports Kitty to the medlab, but the test show nothing wrong. Only the EEG shows more complexity than normal. Then Kitty wakes up, and embraces Kurt, happy to see him alive. The X-Men are confused, but Kitty says she's now Kate, Kitty's future self, her mind sent back to the past to save the future. In her timeline, this is the day on which Senator Kelly, Professor Xavier and Moira MacTaggert are killed by the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, touching off 30 years of mutant discrimination and extermination, culmnating in the very real threat of nuclear war. The X-Men are skeptical, but Wolverine's senses show him that Kitty sounds and acts like a woman, not like a child, so Storm agrees to travel to Washington to meet the Professor, if only to have him scan Kitty.

En route, the X-Men ask Kate about the events that follow Kelly's murder. She tells them about the rabid anti-mutant was elected President. He tried to get the Mutant Control Act passed, but it was declared unconstitutional, so the administration reactivated the Sentinels with broad parameters and a license to kill, resulting in the extermination of both mutant and non-mutant heroes and villains, and eventually to the Sentinel takeover of the entire continent. Kate breaks down and cries for a while, then reveals that the Sentinels are planning to move on Europe, and the other nations have responded with the threat of nuclear war. Kate tells them about the time-switch plan, and that she was chosen because at this point in time, her younger self had no psychic shields. She wonders how her comrades in the future are faring...

2013: The X-Men have been busted out of the camp by Logan, and make their way through an abandoned subway tunnel. Magneto has stayed behind to cover their escape, a brave act that will certainly kill him, a fact bemoaned by Colossus, though bringing the crippled ally along was impossible. Suddenly, Franklin senses something, as three Sentinels rip off the roof and one incinerates the last member of the Fantastic Four. Rachel freaks, having been in rapport with Franklin as he died, then lashes out at the robot, disabling it. Wolverine asks Peter for a "fastball special," which allows him to open up a second Sentinel, which Storm finishes off, while Peter and Rachel make short work of the third. More Sentinels approach, so Colossus topples a derelict building on them. The X-Men move on to the Baxter Building, the Sentinels' control center and their primary target.

The Pentagon, today. Raven Darkhlome makes her way through the halls, her status as a member of the Office of Defense R&D giving her access to most areas. She steps into a side room, however, and drops the facade to reveal Mystique, leader of the new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Her followers are thre blind precognitive Destiny, Avalanche, with vibratory powers, the pyrokinetic Pyro and the Blob, from Magneto's Brotherhood. Mystique queries Destiny, who reveals Blob's unhappiness with taking orders from her. Internecine bickering and power displays ensue, with Mystique finally warning Blob not to cross her.

In the U.S. Senate, Senator Robert Kelly makes his case for a better understanding of the mutant issue, though his aganda seems to be clearly geared towards his Mutant Registration Act. Professor X and Moira are there as his witnesses. Xavier senses his X-Men's arrival, and asks Storm to open her mind to him so he can learn why they have come. Moira argues against the need for this hearing in the first place, and the suddenly, the far wall crumbles as if in an avalanche. The Brotherhood stand in its wake, and proclaim their intention to teach Kelly a lesson. Before they cam move, though, a lightning blot strikes in front of them, and the X-Men appear to challenge and stop the terrorists. Mystique orders the Brotherhood to attack and the battle is joined!
