"Sentinels" is the name given to the classes of robots that were created expressly for the purpose of
hunting, capturing, and in some cases killing mutants. They are generally equipped with
mutant-tracking sensors, lasers, catchwebs, disintegrator beams and other various
and deadly weapons. Usually the Sentinels are controlled by a Master Mold, a prime unit that functions as a director for all drone activities. In addition, most Sentinels are self-adapting, learning and modifying
themselves after every encounter. There have been a number of waves of Sentinels, in both this reality and in others, each with slight differences. Descriptions of each wave follow, with specifications and related history where available.
Wave I: Mark I Sentinels
Builder Bolivar Trask
Known Specifications:
- Height: Approx. 12 feet
- Weapons: "Destructo-Ray," Stun ray, Heavy Gravity ray
- Communications: Voice activation, Voice emulators in each unit, interunit radio waves
Origin: The first person to create Sentinels was Bolivar Trask, an anthropologist who believed mutants would enslave humans and tried to make plans to prevent it. Using unknown funds, he built a Master Mold template unit to help him build large robots with which he hoped to capture all known mutants.
Means of defeat: These Sentinels were controlled by radio waves, and interference in the control waves made them collapse. Professor X got a helicopter crew to move a large crystal from a building display to block the waves and the Sentinels all stopped. The Master Mold was destroyed when Bolivar Trask himself realized that the unit was malfunctioning, so he blew up the lab they both were in.
Wave II: Mark II Sentinels
Builder: Larry Trask
Known Specifications:
- Height: Approx. 22 feet
- Weapons:
- Communications: Voice activation, Voice emulators in each unit, interunit radio waves
Origin: Trask's son Larry, enraged at his father's death and believing whole-heartedly in his father's agenda, re-started the Sentinel program. He was assisted by a family friend, Judge Chalmers and built giant Sentinels in a mountain base in the Adirondacks. It is unclear how he funded such a massive undertaking, given the failure of his father's models and the lack of commercial patents and revenues. These Sentinels managed to capture most of the original Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and the X-Men.
Means of Defeat: First, the Mark II Sentinels turned on Larry Trask, who was revealed to be a precognitive mutant when Chalmers removed a cloaking amulet from Trask's body. Then Cyclops use logic to convince the Sentinels that the sun itself was the source of all mutations, and since the Sentinels' mandate was to destroy mutants, their ultimate target must be the sun. The Sentinels accepted this logic and took off into space, heading for the sun.
Wave III-IV: Mark III and X-Sentinels
Builder: Project: Armageddon (Steven Lang, Director)
Origin: Steven Lang, backed by the Hellfire Club, then restarted the program, but the X-Men fought him and his batch of robots as well. Furthermore, Sebastian Shaw's murder and replacement of the Inner Circle brought the Sentinels further under his control, so he could ensure they were never used for extermination. The Mark IIIs were giant robots with omnium-steel frames, chobham armor, shock repressors and fast-acting damage repair systems. Their weaponry included fingertip spears, palm-shot nerve gas and trapping coils, but apparently no energy weapons.
The X-Sentinels were seen only by the X-Men on Lang's space station, and were built to mimic Professor X and the original five X-Men.
Means of Defeat: Wolverine first noticed that the X-Sentinels were not human by their mechanical smell, and he gutted the Marvel Girl Sentinel. The X-Men then

Wave V: Prime Sentinels
Builder: Operation: Zero Tolerance (Bastion, Director)
Known Specifications:
- Height: Approx. 5.5-6.5 feet
- Weapons:
- Communications:
Origin:
This batch of Sentinels, created for Operation: Zero Tolerance, were actually humans who had been fitted with cybernetic, techno-organic implants. These altered humans were used as "sleeper" agents, unaware
of their natures until a signal from the OZT base activated their programming,
which also induced the implants to create armor and weapons systems. After Bastion
was defeated and the operation shut down, Stryfe somehow
got their command codes and hunted down Lady Deathstrike
to gain complete access to their command net (Deathstrike was supposedly cyborged
by the same people who created the Sentinels). Fortunately, the X-Men stopped
him, but sadly, there is no way to de-cyborg the sleeper units.
Means of Defeat:
Wave VI: Wild Sentinels
Builder: Wild Master Mold
Seen in the Genoshan Massacre and in Chicago (Mekanix). Part of a special black-ops program. The Wild Master Mold located in the jungles of Ecuador creates Sentinels out of spare parts, and each one is capable of regenerating itself using almost any metal or machinery available. The Sentinels took non-standard forms, usually based on local wildlife or vehicles, such as chickens, snakes, grasshoppers and helicopters. The only common factor between these robots appears to be the Sentinel-style helmet. Almost all other anthropomorphic features are missing. In fact, most of the Wild Sentinel "heads" contain an imaging unit such as a video camera and often, a weapon right near it.
Wave VII: Chicago Sentinels
Builder: U.S. Government? Dr. Metellus?
Possibly surplus from previous waves, though at least some appear to have been of more recent production. Controlled by Dr. Metellus. Destroyed by the Chicago Morlocks.
Wave VIII: Weapon Plus Super-Sentinels
Builder: Weapon Plus Program (John Sublime, Director)
Wave IX: Jeffries's Sentinels
Builder: Madison Jeffries, Director Colcord, Master Mold II
Origin: Director Colcord had captured Madison Jeffries, a technomorph for the Weapon X Program. When Colcord was ousted, he took Jeffries with him. Jeffries created a fleet of robots based around his old Box armor, but over time, these artificial intelligences became increasingly self-aware. Soon the Boxbots had either found records or re-developed the Sentinels concept, and created a Master Mold to make real Sentinels. These Sentinels appeared to be of the giant variety, and were seen only once, immediately prior to M-Day, when the three factions of the Weapon X/Plus Program clashed. The Sentinels were either all destroyed immediately prior to M-Day or their functioning was tied to Jeffries's powers, since they did not appear to be functioning afterwards.

Days of Future Past
Sentinels
all but took over the world in Rachel Summers' future,
destroying all super-powered beings and enslaving humanity. All the remaining X-Men except Kate Pryde and Rachel Summers were killed by the Sentinels while Kate's mind was switched with that of her younger self. Later, Kate and Rachel blew up the Nimrod-producing facility, but to little avail. Following Rachel's time-jump, the human governments tried to shut down the robots. The Sentinel Master Mold formed a Hierarchy unit and took over the world by launching nuclear attacks on the humans. In England, the Omega- and Delta-class Sentinels slaughtered the heroes gathered in the Camelot retreat, leaving only a small band led by "Arthur." Rachel Summers finally returned with Excalibur, and together they reprogrammed the Master Mold Hierarchy with a new directive: to protect all life.
AOA Sentinels
Builder: Bolivar and Moira Trask, under the guidance of the Human Council
The good guys, finally. Similar coloring to the Mark IV Shaw Industries Sentinel. Used by the Human Resistance Council to evacuate humans from North America and later to fight against the Sea Wall activated by Apocalypse.
Mutant X Universe
Yet another version of the giant mutant-hunting robots. They are similar to our Sentinels in most ways, but seem a little more human, possibly because they are linked to their creator Larry Trask. Trask gave up his humanity to physically interface with the central control mechanism, becoming the Master Mold in a way similar to what happened to Steven Lang in our reality. They are, as always, every mutant's nightmare, and are housed in a mountain in the Rockies. later, the Goblin Queen took control of Trask and the Sentinels, and used them to put New York City under her rule. Then, she imbued the robots with demon souls and sent them to destroy the Allied forces that attacked her. However, most, if not all of the Sentinels were destroyed by Namor and the aquatic beasts he brought to the fight.
Ultimate Universe
Giant mutant hunting robots. Xavier negotiated the repeal of the Sentinel program, but the robots were still used to massacre the citizens of the Savage Land. Magneto reprogrammed the robots and sent them back to the USA to kill all humans. The X-Men defeated the robots.
S.H.I.E.L.D. created a new set of Sentinels when they found out that Magneto was still alive. Instead of robots, the Sentinels were sixty agents, each with full body armor like a miniature version of the original Sentinels.
Later, the larger-sized Sentinels were brought back by a cabal in the White House who hoped to discredit mutants by assassinating the President. The X-Men and the short-lived government-sponsored mutant team defeated the Sentinels, but Beast was killed by falling debris.
