Powers & History: Steinbeck was a pyrokinetic who could breathe fire to such temperatures he could burn flesh from the bone with no apparent effort.

Steinbeck attracted Xavier’s attention when he sold two Soviet Sentinels to Cuban government officials with anti-mutant regimes in mind. Steinbeck murdered the agent at the time, a young woman named Prudence. Xavier was devastated but replaced Prudence with Mystique.

Unknown to Shortpack and Xavier – Prudence had survived and possessed Steinbeck but their minds were wrestling for control and they were falling apart internally. It appears that Steinbeck was the recessive personality of this "Quiet Man." His body was destroyed in the final fight with Mystique.
