Real Name: Samuel PareAfter his mutantcy manifested, Sammy was picked on daily by his classmates and neighborhood kids, and apparently also by his father, who abused him and his mother regularly. When Professor X learned of Sammy's mutation, he came to the Pare home in Canada and offered Sammy a place in the Xavier Institute. The Pares agreed, somewhat reluctantly, and Sammy joined Professor X in the X-Jet just in time to answer a distress call from Juggernaut in Cassidy Keep. Following a fight against Black Tom Cassidy, the X-Men escaped with Juggernaut, but Cain fell into the ocean thanks to Tom's final attack. Sammy immediately jumped into the water and saved Cain from drowning, and Cain, looking to amend his ways, took a very paternal attitude towards the boy.
Sammy and Cain's friendship grew, and even encompassed Sammy's peer Carter Ghazakanian for a time. However, when Sammy's parents learned that he was buddies with the "criminal Juggernaut" they appealed to the Canadian government and Alpha Flight to get Sammy back. Alpha Flight came to Xavier's to collect Sammy and the inevitable fight ensued, but Xavier was eventually forced to let Sammy return to his parents. When Cain later discovered that Sammy was being abused by his father, however, he went to Canada and put a stop to it physically. In the process, Sammy's house was totalled and his mother was also injured, causing Sammy to yell at Cain in grief, telling him not to hurt them anymore, and causing Cain to stop and take stock of his impulsive actions. Juggernaut was later arrested for his involvement. Just before trial, however, Sammy and his mother came to Cain's assistance, convincing the judge that had Cain not interfered (when the police had ignored their cries for help), Sammy's father might eventually have killed them. On the basis of said testimony, the judge released Cain, and Sammy was free to return to Xavier's.
Recently, Sammy was roomed with Jay Guthrie (Icarus) and fast-tracked into the X-Men due to his specific abilities, indicating that he may have more power than breathing underwater. Either that or breathing in water is sufficiently rare to cause such a logistical move on the part of the headmasters. As a result, Sammy was not be placed on a student "squad." He also never officially a mutant name, though "Squidboy" is unofficially his, based on what his classmates in Canada used to call him.
Sammy then saw a strange tree on the campus and thought it was Black Tom, though no one believed him. He was in fact correct, as he found out when he followed Juggernaut away from the school. Juggernaut was meeting with Tom and a new Brotherhood led by Exodus. Sammy saw Cain seemingly kill Nocturne, and ran into the midst of the villains, screaming at his former friend. Black Tom grabbed Sammy and pummeled him into the ground. With his last breath, Sammy expressed his hatred for Cain for deceiving all of them. Little did he know that Juggernaut was faking allegiance to Tom, and months later, Cain was able to use the guilt of Sammy's death to convince Tom to surrender to the British police.
