Well, I have good news and bad news. Good news: This one-shot reveals what happened to Marrow. Bad news: This one-shot doesn't reveal what happened to Marrow. More later. Since this is mainly a Spidey issue, so I'm not going to give a detailed summary. What's important is that it starts off with the final scene, in which Spidey's holding Marrow atop a bridge, she stabs his hand and plummets to (presumably) her death. I really didn't like this framing of the story with this final scene. It made the whole thing anti-climactic. Other than that, though, the story was pretty good. It all starts when Peter Parker meets this girl Sarah Rushman in a club - she's a waitress, but she was also in one of his guest lectures at ESU and loved what he said. So Peter (still grieving for MJ) asks her out. Actually, he fumbles his words but she gets the idea. However, just before they're supposed to meet, Peter spots a supermodel and moves in to get a shot for the Bugle and make some cash. Then screams erupt and Peter sees a dead guy with bone daggers in him and "two left" written on his chest. Obviously, Marrow's in the house. Peter changes and finds Marrow, who's talking in broken English and in 3rd person. They fight and Marrow gets away buy pushing a water tower off a roof, forcing Spidey to save the people below. One nice thing about this scene is that even after Spidey stops the tower, some people think he actually tipped it onto them, playing up the whole "Spidey-as-villain" thing. Anyway, let me just say that it would have helped not to have Sarah named "Sarah," because it was so obvious that she was Marrow. Anyway, the point is that Peter and Sarah meet, go out, she invite him to stay the night, he declines, and that's when all hell breaks loose. Peter hears screams from Sarah's apartment. Quick change to Spidey and he's in her room, taking out these 2 bruisers who are tryingto inject her with something. He grabs Sarah and skips out. Suddenly a S.H.I.E.L.D transport appears, which Spidey takes out nicely, though in protecting Sarah he breaks his arm. I really liked having S.H.I.E.L.D. in this story, and I especially enjoyed seeing Sharon Carter. Meanwhile, Sarah has escaped, and Marrow appears and flings some daggers at Carter, which a thoroughly confusing Spidey narrowly stops. Carter explains that an agent found Marrow in the sewers in bad mental shape and brought her back to HQ, where they constructed the Sarah Rushman persona, and only let Marrow "out" to destroy rogue Life Model Decoys (androids), like the one in the supermodel's limo. Spidey had interrupted an injection that would have kept Marrow focused on her mission, and out of "Sarah's" life. Ethical considerations are bandied about, but the sum total is that Spidey tries to save Marrow, who can't kill him (though she tries) and then runs to the GW Bridge and jumps off. Peter catches her, leading us back to the opening scene. My major gripe here is that this scene was COMPLETELY different from the one at the beginning, and the two don't match at all! Anyway, contrary to Peter's belief as he puts Sarah's stuff in storage later that week, Marrow survived the fall and ended up in the sewer again, where she's found by Hemingway. OK, so all in all not bad, though not enough about what happened to Marrow in the gap. Why did she leave the X-Men? What happened to her mentally? My gut says "Dark Beast," especially since Hemingway is one of his minions and would be bringing Marrow back to him. So I guess next time we see her, Marrow will be part of Gene Nation again. Hmmm... Not sure I like that, but I do think turning her back into a villain was a good move. It was too easy the way she became a good guy, though admittedly being able to control her bones and have "normal" face helped. One last Q: how did Sarah Rushman have blonde hair, while Marrow still had her pink locks? Shape-shifting isn't in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s repertoire. Something left over from the Skrull healing chamber? That would be interesting. So if you like Spidey or Marrow, pick this up. If not, you can probably wait till Marrow's next appearance, where this will probably be recapped. |
