Codename Etymology: Pronounced sĭs'tər grĭm [From Old Norse systir "female sibling"] [Possibly from Grimm, two German brothers: one a linguist, the other a folklorist].
Powers & History: None (human). Nico’s parents were both dark magicians, although they had no idea that Nico was also able to use magic like them. Nico ran away from home with the rest of the Runaways and first discovered her powers when she confronted her mother, who tried to stab her through the chest with the Staff of One. However, Nico’s body absorbed the staff, but it can only be released if Nico is bleeding. It’s only good for a few uses before she has to absorb it again to recharge it, although the re-absorption process is unclear at the moment; sometimes it appears very painful for her, while other times she doesn’t even notice it happening. Also, once she’s cast a spell, she can’t cast it again without something going wrong.

Nico had a difficult relationship with Alex that she often ignored, even kissing Topher (who later turned out to be a vampire). Although she loved him, she turned on him when she discovered he was evil rather than joining his side, and escaped the Rite of Thunder with the other Runaways. Since Alex’s death, she has taken over his leadership role, and is usually the one who organizes the team and gives out orders in battle. Although Alex’s betrayal hurt her so much that she couldn’t use her staff at first, she has since reconciled with his death, though she admitted that she tried to resurrect him.

Since taking the leader role, Nico has become noticeably more hard-edged in giving orders and getting things done, even going as far to say that she won’t hesitate to kill new recruit Victor Mancha should he display any hint of being overtaken by Ultron’s programming to kill all heroes on earth. She has also been on a major emotional roller coaster, reacting somewhat negatively when Karolina revealed her feelings towards her, and then blaming herself when Karolina chose to leave earth with Xavin, a Super Skrull betrothed to Karolina by their families, to go to her homeworld. Even as far as kissing Chase while they were in New York after he got the two of them out of a sticky situation while searching for a man posing as their friend Cloak, which both agreed not to tell Gert, Chase’s girlfriend at that point, about.

This came back to bite them in the butt when a new Pride surfaced to attack the Runaways. During their initial confrontation, a spell was cast by one of the Pride members that replayed the scene of the kiss for everyone to see, which infuriated Gert to the point that Old Lace lashed out at Nico without being prompted. During the confusion, Molly was kidnapped by the Pride and the kids retreated to their hide out to regroup, where the soon discovered Karolina had returned to them. Nico was overjoyed to have her friend back in their lives, and they regrouped enough to launch their own offensive against the new Pride. While the others fought Alex’s internet friends, Nico went after their leader, a younger Geoffrey Wilder, and when she found him with Molly, he shot Nico right through the chest. However, this was only Xavin, who had returned with Karolina, posing as Nico while the real one rescued Molly. They managed to escape the burning building they were trapped in, but Gert was not as lucky as she was killed by Geoffrey. Afterwards, Nico had an argument with Chase about what to do with Gert’s body, and then erased Geoff’s mind and sent him back to the past at the point he was pulled into the present.
