Real Name: Katherine (Kitty) Pryde Shadowcat is also a fully-trained ninja, thanks to Ogun, and is a computer and electronic hardware whiz. She had a huge crush on Colossus almost from the day they met, and the two did fall in love, but Peter dumped Kitty after his experiences with Zsaji during the Secret Wars. During the Mutant Massacre, Kitty was injured by Harpoon, whose energy harpoon interfered with her power. She was unable to stop her phasing, and her molecules began to drift farther and farther apart. If not for the assistance of the Fantastic Four and Dr. Doom, Kitty would have completely dissipated. Soon after, the X-Men "died" and Kitty helped form Excalibur. Little by little Kitty has regained control over her power, and is now substantial on a regular basis, although it is sometimes a strain. While a member of Excalibur, Kitty discovered that she had become the holder of her best friend Illyana's (Magik) Soulsword, an item of great mystical power, when Illyana reverted back to her true age of 6. The sword was coveted by Dr. Doom, but ended up in the possession of Darkoth. However, after Illyana's death, the sword returned to Kitty and was actually incorporated into her body, though she didn't know it until months later. In the meantime, she befriended and then fell in love with Pete Wisdom, a former spy who joined Excalibur. Then a magician named Darkmoor came to find the Soulsword, which was affecting Kitty's personality. Kitty and Daytripper managed to defeat the demon, and Kitty handed the Soulsword over to Daytripper. Kitty's relationship with Pete continued, even through the return of Colossus to Earth after the fall of Avalon and his subsequent joining up with the Excalibur team. However, after an adventure as a temporary agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., in which she not only fought the disembodied spirit of Ogun, but also met a really nice guy her age, who was subsequently killed, Kitty broke up with Pete Wisdom and he left the team. Shortly therafter, Kitty, along with Colossus and Nightcrawler left Excalibur to rejoin the X-Men in America.
Not long after the battle of the Twelve, Kitty underwent a large personality shift. She became more rebellious and hard-edged than before, and started carrying one of Wolverine's broken bone claws as a weapon. She got involved with the Neo Seth, who believed she was Neo, too. During Seth's attempt to sabotage the High Evolutionary's space station, which was appropriated by NASA, he knocked Kitty out and planned to save her life. Kitty escaped and knocked him around until they had to flee the station, but she went back out into space to phase a falling beam that would have crushed the shuttle. Kitty found her way inside and found a suit that Seth had intended for her to use. She put it on and it took her to Earth, but where she landed is unknown. Recently, Kitty apparently showed up back at the X-Mansion, only to find that Colossus had sacrificed his life to host the cure for the Legacy Virus. She volunteered to take Peter's ashes back to the Ust-Ordinski Collective where he was raised. Afterwards she returned to college, where she apparently had been for some time, and wrote a letter to Professor X stating that she needed to fulfill her own dream in her own way, and asking that the X-Men not contact her. Professor X agreed, and deleted all references to Kitty from the X-Men's computer system.
Kitty attended Robert Heinlein University in Chicago and settled into "normal" life, with an apartment and a part-time job tending bar. She continued to search for her father, who had been in Genosha when the Sentinels decimated the mutant population there. While she no longer considered herself a "superhero," the rising anti-mutant tide and certain dangerous situations forced her to use her powers and skills. After saving a family from a fire, she returned to find a clip of her father in her system, telling her to make him proud. Then she punched a fellow student for spouting anti-mutant dogma and was almost expelled. Instead, she is required to attend regular therapy sessions with a psychiatrist. At the same time, she re-connected with Karma shortly before undergoing an attack by Wild Sentinels as well as a sabotage attempt by the members of the Purity anti-mutant faction. Together with Karma, Shola Inkezi, a telekinetic and Thomas More, a former Purity member, they fended off both threats.
Kitty was then captured by Reverend Stryker's goons and pumped full of psychotropic drugs in an attempt to convert her to his cause. Stryker took Kitty with him when Lady Deathstrike was turned against him and they ended up in a hidden town full of mutant children and run by a "Reverend Paul." Kitty suddenly became ill, and also found that phasing through the people of the town disrupted their bodies, killing them. Kitty opposed Stryker, but was wary of Paul. When she discovered that Paul was an A.I. who was co-opting the mutants into his network and he had killed the humans, Stryker pushed her into Paul, disrupting him. Kitty almost killed Stryker, but opted against that course and instead allowed him to merge with Paul in an attempt to teach him about humanity. Kitty still shuns the superhero life and is planning on entering the political arena. Recently, Kitty was asked to aid Storm's team of X-Men in their fight against Elias Bogan and his shadow telepath. Kitty's presence was lucky, as the telepath turned out to be her old roommate Rachel Summers. Kitty returned to the Mansion to rejoin the faculty, and was recruited into Cyclops's team, albeit reluctantly. Her world was further turned upside-down with her discovery of Colossus, alive and well, and his inclusion on her team as well.
Soon afterwards, Kitty was the one who defeated the resurrected Wild Sentinel in Genosha by making it confront its new human emotions and deal with the murders it committed. Not long afterwards, she finally got together with Colossus, though she phased through the floor at a particularly climactic moment. The next day, the Hellfire Club attacked the Mansion, and Kitty's powers were disrupted by Negasonic Teenage Warhead, causing her to phase uncontrollably through the floor and down into the Earth's crust. Kitty marshalled her strength and forced herself back to the surface, where she confronted Emma Frost, who was working with Hellfire, only to run into Perfection, who appeared to be ANOTHER Emma Frost! Kitty was caught in a telepathic scenario of the future, in which her child with Colossus, a boy named Michael was born and then locked away at about age 2 by Professor X, who sensed great danger in the child's powers. In the fictional scenario, Kitty was locked up as well after apparently attacking the Mansion, and placed in a room that required her to increase her phasing concentration and abilities in order to escape. When she finally got out, she forced the false-Colossus from the vision to tell her where Michael was. At this point the White Queen allowed Kitty to move in the real world, moving her down to the basement, where Kitty forced herself into a shielded containment chamber and successfully removed its occupant. However, while Kitty believed it to be her son, in reality what she had taken out was the alien Stuff's body, which contained the mind of Cassandra Nova Xavier. Fortunately, Cyclops was able to shoot the phantom Hellfire Club, leaving only Emma, whom Kitty phased into a cavern below the Mansion.
