Real Name: Wanda MaximoffWhile primarily an Avengers character, Scarlet Witch came into contact with the X-Men very early in her career, as a member of her father Magneto's Brotherhood. During her time as an active Avenger, Wanda fell in love with and married the Vision, a synthezoid and fellow Avenger. Wanda then used her powers to allow herself to be impregnated by the Vision, and gave birth to two boys. Since the boys were actually creations of their mother's mutant powers, they were unable to live on their own, and disappeared whenever their mother was unconscious. When Wanda found out that the boys were actually two pieces of the demon Mephisto's soul given form by her, she went insane, rejoined the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and then fell in with Immortus, becoming a nexus for all probabilities. After Onslaught, and her return from the pocket dimension created by Franklin Richards, Wanda was able to communicate with and summon the ionic energy form of the dead Avenger Wonder Man, with whom she shared a strong emotional connection.
During a battle with the Grim Reaper and a group of dead Avengers, Wanda used her love to actually resurrect Wonder Man, who has rejoined the team. The Vision, whose body had been destroyed and rebuilt twice since their marriage, has assured Wanda that he no longer has the emotions of her husband, and that his destruction constituted his death, and so she should consider their marriage over. It appears, however, that he still feels for her, and only told her this to help her move on with her life. Recently, with Captain America's disappearance and Iron Man's incapacitation, Wanda accepted the role of deputy leader of the Avengers. She also journeyed to Genosha at the U.N.'s behest to see how Magneto was running the country. When things got dicey due to the Carrion Cove rebellion, she summoned her teammates, but they were trounced and forced to leave once Magneto regained full command of his abilities. Wanda then cut off all communication with Magneto.
After Magneto (IV)'s attack on New York and subsequent death, Wanda returned to Genosha for his funeral and found out that Lorna Dane (Polaris) was also her sister. Returning to Avengers duty, Wanda seemed to begin a relationship with Captain America, but then denied her actions. She slowly became unstable, as she realized that the other Avengers were hiding the secret of her lost twins from her. The final blow came as Vision returned to the Avengers, only to blow up on their front lawn, and then Jack of Hearts returned, seemingly from the dead, and exploded on Ant-Man, killing him as well. An alien invasion immediately ensued, leading to Hawkeye's death, and the Avengers realized that the Scarlet Witch was behind it all. They also found that Agatha Harkness, Wanda's mentor, had been murdered. Wanda herself finally appeared and demanded her children back. She fought off the combined Avengers, but with the help of Dr. Strange she was subdued. Before anyone could act, however, Magneto appeared via wormhole and spirited her off to Genosha, where she remained. She began to warp reality in her local area, so Charles Xavier and Dr. Strange tried to cure her of her madness with telepathy and magic.
| Wanda, however, resisted, turning the world into a mutant paradise in which Magneto was the effective king of the world, based out of Genosha. Interestingly, in this warped reality Wanda is human. To account for Nocturne's presence in the world she appears to have had an affair with Nightcrawler, though that is unconfirmed. She rarely ventures out of the palace, and even at Magneto's birthday gala she appeared with a veiled face. When the awakened heroes attacked Genosha, Dr. Strange discovered that the Wanda viewed by the public was a simulacrum she used for appearances, while she stayed indoors with her twin boys. She seemed only half-aware of the changes she had made. Then Hawkeye arrived and shot her with two arrows, which she immediately discorporated, then did the same to Hawkeye himself. When Magneto was wakened by Layla Miller and (nearly?) killed Quicksilver, Wanda freaked and said "no more mutants," resetting the world back to its normal reality but with 99% of the world's mutants transformed to human. |
Wanda is currently living among the gypsies in Eastern Europe, unbeknownst to anyone else. It is uncertain whether she retains any of her powers.
