Powers & History: Penance has red rock hard diamond-like skin that can cut through almost anything. However, as she is a mute and cannot communicate, she cannot reveal her true identity.

Until recently, Monet St. Croix was thought to have been transformed into Penance by her brother Marius (Emplate when she refused to join him as a life-drainer. Her twin sisters, Claudette and Nicole, who had merged and taken her place as "M" later, used their powers to switch places with her, becoming Penance and allowing Monet to regain her true form.

The entire history of Penance was thrown into question when an explosion set off during a fight with Emplate split the twins apart again, but this time, the Penance body remained! Thinking that she was just an empty shell, Gen X put Penny in the infirmary. Shortly after, though, she awoke and escaped into the woods. When the team pursued her, thinking that she had mauled a young boy, they found instead that a sasquatch (Bigfoot) had escaped and was causing the trouble. Penance appeared to help her friends and then scratched "Home" on a tree. She later carved an ice sculpture of an unknown man with a staff. Whose mind is inside Penance and why is unknown, as is whether that mind has been there all along.

When anti-mutant sentiments began to rise and threaten the Gen X students directly, Emma and Sean sent Penance, Artie and Leech to live with Ambassador St. Croix (M’s father) in Algeria. Some time later, Penance was captured by scientists and held in a lab. She was eventually freed by reluctant heroes Ricochet III, Spider-Woman IV and Julie Power. Penance, who had been re-dubbed "Hollow" by her captors, stabbed Julie in the chest when Julie tried to calm her with a lightshow. Phil Urich, co-leader of the "former teen heroes" support group The Loners (of which Hollow's would-be rescuers were members) took Hollow home, finding himself strangely attracted to her.
