"The Gift" Part of the "Inferno" X-Over
Synopsis & Review by Cihndar. Thanks!: As the New Mutants fly away, Moonstar begins to sense death all around. The New Mutants search for Magik and the city comes alive around them. The group does their best to defend themselves against the living objects. Colossus questions some demons about Illyana. They tell him that she doesn't look like the girl in his pictures and that S'ym is their ruler. The demons surround him and state that they'll take him as an offering to S'ym. Magneto and the Inner Circle fight off demons. Magneto is surprised to see the demons carrying off Colossus for the master of magnetism thought the X-Man dead. N'astirh appears and offers the Inner Circle a truce. As the New Mutants fly though the city, they think they see Magneto below. They are sure he'll be on their side, but when the group moves closer they see Magneto talking with N'astirh. Wolfsbane overhears them bartering territory so the group decides to leave before Magneto gets a chance to turn on them. The demons drop Colossus into the S'ym/Magik fight. Magik realizes her brother is alive and lunges at S'ym because the X-Man is hurt. The New Mutants see Magik fighting S'ym. They know they must help her, no matter what she is turning into. Wolfsbane says that they have to stop her from enacting vengeance. Warlock grabs her and crashes into a pawn shop. Various inanimate objects taunt Magik. Colossus tackles S'ym and then sees his sister as she tries to hide from him. Magik claims she is dead inside and teleports the New Mutants into Limbo. S'ym blames Illyana's transformation on Colossus and the metal giant goes into a rage. As Colossus and S'ym fight, the demons go after the babies. Despite Wolfsbane's pleas, Magik accepts her throne. As long as she is the dark ruler of Limbo, S'ym won't be. Colossus fights S'ym while Skids, Rusty, and Moonstar defend the church. Dani can see death everywhere and finally collapses. As Magik begins to fully claim Limbo, Rahne runs off. The others try to stop her, but she is determined to save the innocent child Illyana. She jumps through portal after portal until she finds the child. When they teleport again they are face to face with Magik, the Darkchilde. She blames all that she has become on the younger version of herself. She sheds her armor and becomes a being of energy. She prepares to strike down the child Illyana when Rahne stops her and says she has a choice. Magik finally realizes that the only choice is to permanently remove herself from Limbo. The New Mutants are teleported to Earth and the demons are sucked into Limbo. Magik casts her sword away and S'ym is pulled from the Earth. At the church everything calms. Dani, Skids, and Rusty leave to see what happened. The group stands over the shell of Magik's armor. They mourn her and Rahne tell Colossus that she wasn't the Darkchilde at the end. As Colossus holds the armor, he hears his sister's voice. He tears open the shell and finds the child Illyana inside. She hugs her brother and Rahne. Cannonball says that the teenage Illyana was not erased from history because they still remember her. He states that her sacrifice saved them all. Though the portal to Limbo is gone, N'astirh still plans to build a bridge there with Madelyne and Nathan's souls. Review: There's still a lot of good stuff to come in Inferno, but as far as pathos goes, this is the best of the book. Firstly, the title (you'll have to forgive me, I love a good title). Looking back at the story, you couldn't have gotten a better title. I always feel that simple titles work the best. Magik getting the chance to battle the one who nearly killed her as a child, great, but Rahne was right: it "can only drag her deeper into darkness." In fact the New Mutants stories of Inferno are consistent in that evil comes with what one wants, not as some foul beast (though that happens too). The escape from Limbo, the fight against S'ym, being able to usurp S'ym: all wrong choices because they cost Illyana her soul. In the end the right choice is to remove herself, part and present, from the evil. And of course the casting of the sword into the darkness and becoming of light (as the book puts it) was the only real way to pull the demon army from Earth. After that, it was only fitting for Illyana to receive her innocence as well as a second chance.
