"Demon Reign"
Part of the "Inferno" X-Over

Synopsis & Review by Cihndar. Thanks!:
Synopsis: Magik yells at N'astirh for betraying her. The demon states that he did all that he promised her, he just invaded Earth as well. N'astirh reminds Magik that she promised to embrace her dark side, and questions if she really has. The lesser demons like Magik as she is and wants her to rule them. S'ym enters and complains about his underlings bowing to Magik. He gloats over her, but N'astirh pushes her aside. The two demons begin to fight. S'ym has the upper hand because N'astirh has to use his energy to hold the gate open. As they fight, Magik teleports away.

The New Mutants notice ships chased by demons flying around the pentagram. The demons seem worried about the ships, so Warlock pushes their guards aside and the New Mutants go to investigate. As Warlock and Cannonball make the group airborne, Sunspot notices a demon toss a child to N'astirh.

Magik teleports near a diner. The entire scene is twisted and demonic. The possessed cook staff grab Magik by the tail, throw her into a chair, and give her slop made of ground priests and nuns. Magik blames herself for what has happened to these people as the salt and pepper shakers tell her to use the sword. Magik teleports away.

Above Times Square: The New Mutants now see that there are babies at the points of the pentagram and that the people in the ships are trying to save the babies. The group calls themselves the X-Terminators. The group is comprised of: Boom-Boom, Rictor, Skids, Rusty, Wiz Kid, Artie, and Leech (best I can tell, correct me if I'm wrong). It seems Wiz Kid was tricked by N'astirh to create a computer that could translate magic, so the X-Terminators are partly responsible for the invasion. The two groups decide to split up. The New Mutants will save the babies while the X-Terminators go to rescue Wiz Kid.

Magik teleports near a pet shop and is pushed inside. The animals taunt her until she breaks them from their cages with her sword. They dare her to use her sword on them, but she refuses to spill their blood. A birdcage wraps around her before she teleports out.

Cannonball can pierce the pentagram while he is flying and Warlock summons a pair of nonconductive gloves so he can grab the children. The group flies around while being attacked by demons.

Magik teleports into the street and is thrown into a bridal beauty saloon. The chair grabs a hold of her as hair care products move in close.

The New Mutants have seven of the babies. Three more to go and the pentagram is weakening.

N'astirh feels the portal fade as S'ym strikes him. The demon wizard realizes that he has been infected with the transmode virus, but feels he can control it.

The New Mutants see N'astirh explode with energy and the pentagram disappear. They catch the remaining babies and congregate with the X-Terminators at a church. Skids, Rusty, Artie, Leech, Wiz Kid, Moonstar, and Gosamyr stay at the church to rest and to tend to the children as Boom-Boom and Rictor join the remaining New Mutants. They decide to try to find Magik, but then they see the city twist around them.

N'astirh is now red with the transmode virus. His cell are "programmed for magick."

Magik stabs the chair and cuts down the saloon products. She looks at what was done to her and she is not happy. N'astirh attacks. To shake him off, Magik taps into her power and transforms into a demon completely covered with armor. She cuts N'astirh down, but he reforms. He gloats of how she has finally embraced her power, but he says he promised that she would have to consent to their union. He leaves her with something to help her make up her mind. As he disappears, Magik collapses. She feels she is worse than N'astirh because she was born human. As she lays on the floor the figure of S'ym holding a smoking cigar leans against the doorframe.

Review: First off: good title. A little play on words with demon reign and the fact that it's raining demons. Although Simonson was a little heavy handed with the joke by having Warlock mention demon rain in the story. It's kind of a: "If you didn't get the joke, I'll explain it to you."

N'astirh: he's all over the place. I suppose when he made the deal with Magik it was a past version of himself. Still, he must have talked with Warren (X-Factor 36), brought Madelyne to Sinister (Uncanny 240-241), started the invasion (end of NM 71), started to fight with S'ym, fed off Longshot (Uncanny 241), continued to fight with S'ym, then took the baby to Madelyne (end of Uncanny 241). He's also in X-Factor 37, but I'll get to that later.

Magik's descent into demonhood, all because of power. Don't use the Ring, Frodo! Don't use the Ring! Seriously though, I thought it kind of interesting that she ended up in a bridal saloon and of course, N'astirh wants her as his bride.

I don't have a lot to say about the other New Mutants. It's not a bad story, just nothing wonderful as far as I'm concerned.

A couple of gripes. For one, Magik's hair was blonde even in her demon form at the end of NM 71, and it's red at the beginning of NM 72. I actually think she looks better with red hair, but it's inconsistent. Secondly, when the fight between S'ym and N'astirh begins, it shows a hole form in S'ym to avoid N'astirh's blast. The blast hits Magik and as she lays on the ground, it shows S'ym emerging from the ground behind her. What happened? What did I miss?

The artwork had its ups and downs. The final image of S'ym in the doorway was great. It provides for a little bit of a cliffhanger.

One last note: Boom-Boom refers to the New Mutants as "muties." I thought she was a mutant. Can anyone help me with that one?
