Part of the "Inferno" X-Over
Synopsis & Review by Cihndar. Thanks!: Belasco's throne room: Magik recounts how Belasco kidnapped her. Wolfsbane first stumbles into Nightcrawler's leg bone and then Shadowcat's skull. Magik picks up the skull; it is twisted and inhuman. She mourns the death then smashes the skull, stating she chose to murder them, no one forced her. The other New Mutants think that Magik is having a breakdown, but she explains to them about alternate realities and alternate versions of the same person. Demons enter the room and Magik teleports the New Mutants out. They find themselves face to face with the rotted corpse of Colossus. Then they see an uninfected S'ym beating a small girl. Magik stops Rahne from helping the girl. Magik explains that they have traveled into the past and that S'ym is manhandling a child Illyana. They cannot save her without changing Magik's entire history. Before they can leave, they see N'astirh defend the child from S'ym. Magik does not know whom N'astirh is. Before they can watch more, the demons appear again and the mutants teleport again. New York: Magneto, the White Queen, the Black Queen, and Sabastian Shaw look upon the growing Empire State Building from a nearby antenna tower. A telescope rips out a man's eyeballs. Magneto blasts the telescope and the antenna crumbles in protest. Magneto uses his powers to catch the group and to repel the living metal of the tower. Back in Limbo: The New Mutants teleport into N'astirh's lair. His underlings seize them, and N'astirh explains that he was scorned by Belasco, so he stole the wizard's spell book before Magik could destroy it. He has traveled to the past to study the black arts. He tells Magik he wants to help her return to Earth because he loves her. He claims that S'ym was able to take her sword because she feared to embrace the dark power in her soul. To get the sword back and return home she must accept that part of herself. N'astirh offers to send them to S'ym if she will do so.and perhaps be his bride someday should she wish to marry him. The New Mutants are in a tight spot, and Rahne seems like she is about to have a breakdown. So despite her friends' pleas, Magik accepts. After he teleports them, N'astirh underling, Crotus, questions him. He strikes the lackey and speaks of how he plans to use Magik rather than kill her. As Magik fights S'ym, she tells him of N'astirh's treachery. She reclaims her sword and turns into a red demon of herself. The New Mutants are teleported back to Earth, but so are the Limbo demons. Magik can't seem to close the portal. Though N'astirh could not open the portal himself, he is using his abilities to keep Magik's portal open. She yells at him for betraying her. He says though he loves her, he is still a demon. Review: Okay, first off, I don't know a whole lot about the New Mutants. I'm familiar with the character, but as for the overall history, well, there are probably people living in caves who have a more profound knowledge about the subject. I was interested in Gossamyr, but mainly because I know nothing about her. However, that has little to do with the overall story, so we'll move on. All the characters seemed pretty true to form, especially Rahne being too fragile for the stress of Limbo. As far as the New Mutants not knowing about Magik's past, that seemed off to me. I know something about Belasco came up in Uncanny 171. Was it just kept a secret from Magik's team? Magik denying the existence of the darkness in her soul caused one problem, her accepting it caused a bigger problem. The moral is perhaps finding a middle ground between ignoring evil and embracing it. Perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself though. Still, the invasion of Earth was dependent on N'astirh being able to corrupt Magik. I guess it all goes back to "The Fellowship of the Ring" where Gandalf doesn't want the power even though he desired to use it for good.
