Synopsis:

"Death-Hunt"

(June 1984, 22 pages)

Dani is being haunted in her dreams by the bear that killed her parents.

Rachel, a visitor from the future, stands outside the Mansion and recalls the day that the military attacked it, years in her past, but a decade or more in our future. She remembers how Professor X tried to use him powers to reason with the commander, but was blown away by a huge mortar shell. She remained beside his corpse until the army took her prisoner. The drugs and torture came later.

Rachel reassures an approaching cop that she's not loitering, then knocks at the door of the mansion looking for Xavier, but he is away in Massachusetts. She asks the blonde who answered who she is, and freaks out when she replies "Illyana Rasputin," because in Rachel's future, Illyana died as a teenager in the attack on the Mansion, so how could she be the same age years earlier. Rachel runs off in shock, realizing that she jumped to the wrong past.

Sam, Roberto, and Amara defeat robots in the Danger Room, and Dani later runs a sequence of bear hunts to hone her skills.

In space, Warlock flees his father, who tries to kill him. Warlock escapes and heads towards Earth.

Later, Dani goes out at night and summons up the Demon Bear. She brings out its greatest fear, which is herself, and believes she has killed it, but when she turns her back, it fells her. Follwoing Rahne's psychic bond with Dani, which has just abruptly shut down, the New Mutants find her, bloody, in the woods.

Note: This is part 1 of the Demon Bear Saga.
