When the X-Men were captured by the Brood their mentor, Professor X, hoping to continue his dream of harmony between Homo sapiens and Homo superior, collected five new students for the School for Gifted Youngsters. Like their predecessors, these "New Mutants" learned to use their powers safely and effectively. Although they were supposed to be students, and not a strike force, particularly after the return of the X-Men, the kids found themselves in conflict more often than not. Many team members moved on to other things, and a few died, but the core who remained after Professor X's illness and Magneto's abandonment were cared for first by X-Factor and then by Cable, who rebuilt the team and began to move them in a new direction, one that would eventually lead to the dissolution of the New Mutants and to the formation of X-Force.
