"Battle Lines, Part 2"
A Civil War Tie-In! Synopsis: Brooklyn, New York: Anya sits on the edge of a rooftop and wonders to herself that this is a bad idea. It's not hard for them to figure out who she is and they are going to come and arrest her. Maybe it's time she came clean and told her papa what's going on and that she has superpowers. That she spends her evenings beating up bad guys. All the sudden a voice says to be careful because she'll get killed. Anya turns around and her papa is waiting for her with a cake. Anya tells him that her birthday isn't till Saturday. Her father tells her to blow out the candles and that he is sorry but he will be in Chicago working. Anya reassures him that its fine and it's just a birthday but he tells her that it is not fine because it's her sixteenth and before he can continue he is interrupted by Carol Danvers and Simon Williams. Carol tells Anya that she ran off before they had a chance to talk. One Hour Later: Anya's father is being held in a large room with nothing but glass windows and a handrail. Clearly very angry, he pounds the glass yelling that this is bull, his family has done nothing wrong and that they cannot take people and throw them in cells, not in this country! Carol enters the room and greets Mr. Corazon. He turns and points out that she took Anya and wants to know where. Carol informs him that she is perfectly safe but he thinks she is locked up in a cage like an animal. Carol wants to know who told him that because she did no such thing. He tells her he just assumed but Carol cuts him off and tells him she would like to show him something. He asks what this place is and Carol says this is where his daughter is and they are not keeping her in a cell, they are giving her the grand tour and she leads him out to a observation deck. Araņa and Wonder Man are training on the equipment and Araņa is having the time of her life. She manages to swing away from any ropes and bars and Simon points out that she has nowhere to land. She simply tells him that all flying types are all the same, always looking for a place to land instead of looking at what's above. She throws a line up and it wraps around a steel beam, she points out that it was as easy as anything and lands on the edge of the observation deck. Mr. Corazon is shocked at what he sees before him and asks if that is his Aranita? Carol tells Anya it's ok, it's part of why they are here. This is something she has to do. Anya looks at Carol and removes her armour and tells him there is something they need to talk about. Hoboken, New Jersey: Arachne is inside a Laundromat going through an old mans clothes as he looks at a bunch of bikini clad girls in a magazine. She manages to steal his clothing before he notices the trail of going out the door. Outside Max is complaining about the car he is trying to steal. Julia thought he said he could get it up and running in two minutes. He tells her that apparently he isn't as slick at hot-wiring a car as he used to be. Going hero for a couple of years seems to have dulled his criminal skills. All he had to do was. and before he finishes, there is a loud vroom. Julia tells him to scoot over because they need to start moving and she apologises if things don't fit but there was only one guy doing laundry and she didn't have time to check sizes. Max looks at a top that says Dazzler, World Tour 1993 and says that fitting isn't going to be an issue so much as living through the shame. As he begins to drive off, the man from inside runs out and begin to complain and ask himself what he did wrong today? Stark Tower: Carol tells Anya that the important thing is she hasn't done anything wrong. Since the Superhuman Registration Act went into effect, the only times she has been seen in public are when she was traveling around Brooklyn. Although she could be ticketed for appearing in public in costume. Anya interrupts and tells her it's not a costume; it's a part of her. Carol tells her that what she means is, she hasn't been breaking any laws big enough for anyone to care but if she just comes clean and registers but before Carol continues, Mr. Corazon interrupts telling her No! This is craziness! His daughter is too young to register. Carol tells him there is no age limit to the SHRA. If someone with powers and abilities is going to legally use those powers and abilities, then they must be registered and trained, no matter how old they are. She then points out that Spiderman was Anya's age when he first gained powers. Mr. Corazon tells Carol that Anya will not do any of these things she can do. If she cannot do them, she cannot register. He then grabs Anya by the arm and tries to forcefully leave with her but she pulls away and tells him no. He just looks at he and asks No? She tells him that she wants to do this. He tells her that she is not old enough to make this kind of complicated decision. Anya tells him that she is. There were some guys at the Chicken Cow earlier tonight and they were going to hurt people. She was lucky that Ms. Marvel and Wonder Man were there because she had no idea what to do and people could have been hurt. She can say that she isn't going to use her powers, she can promise to never do super heroey type stuff but sometimes, idiots pull out guns and she can't just stand there and watch when bad stuff happens because she promised she wouldn't do anything. Mr. Corazon thinks about it and then says fine, maybe she is old enough to make her own decisions but he is still her papa. If she gets hurt, they will have to deal with him. On the Road: Max tells Julia that she should pull over so they can change out of their costumes, there is no sense risking anyone seeing them driving even if it is dark. Julia says that her life of crime is off to an auspicious start. She's flipped the government the bird, stolen clothes and participated in grand theft auto, all in under 2 hours. Max points out that a couple of larcenies, even grand ones, hardly make for a life of crime. They should think positive, in a few hours they will be out of the country. Julia looks at him and says excuse me? Out of the country? Max informs her that Canada is about seven hours North. If they switch cars every couple of hours, they could be in Montreal by noon at the latest. Julia says she isn't leaving the country until she has Rachel. Max tells her that Rachel is in Colorado. They can call her mother when they get to Montreal and have her brought up to them. Julia tells him no, S.H.E.I.L.D. wouldn't allow that happen. Do you think that they'll let them flee the country then just call home and have someone bring Rachel to them? She is not leaving without her! Max asks why didn't they just leave for Canada in the first place? They talked about it but she wanted to stay and register. Julia tells him that Tony had called her and asked her to join his little police crew. A tear falls down Julia's cheek and she says she thought it was a chance to help people get away that didn't want to register. She wipes away the tear and says all the sudden everybody got all idealistic instead of just running away to fight another day. That's why Hobie Brown is now on Rykers Island and that's where he'd be if she didn't made him runaway! Max tells her that she and Rachel would be safe if she had just played along and let them capture him. Julia tells him to listen to himself. One minute she is supposed to have helped them arrest him and the next she is supposed to leave the country without her daughter? Max tries to tell her that he didn't mean to when she cuts in and says that Rachel is her life and the past few months have been so great with him. She should have run away when this whole registration thing was starting out. He was right and she wasn't because she screwed up and stayed and fought a dumb fight. Now they have to runaway but she wont run with Rachel. Julia puts her hand on his cheek and he looks at her lovingly and says, its time to go get Rachel. Stark Tower: Carol tells Anya and Mr. Corazon that because of Anya's age, she will be allowed to stay with him rather then being required to reside here at the Stark Tower training facility. She'd be the only trainee anyway so it would be lonely for her anyway. But she will need to be there everyday after school and all day on weekends. Suddenly a hologram of Iron Man pops up in the middle of the table and tells Carol to report to briefing room three, code nine is in effect. Anya asks if that is Iron Man? Carol tells her that it was and Anya asks what a code nine is? Carol tells her its when a hero isn't being so heroic. Anya then asks how much is one of those hologram things because she wants one for her X-Box 360. Carol tells her more then she would make in a decade working at Chicken Cow. Right now she can go home with her dad and she'll come by tomorrow. She'll get someone to escort her out but Anya tells her no. If she was all trained and had her badge. She pauses and asks if they get badges but before Carol can reply she continues by saying that if she was fully trained, she would be called to that meeting too, wouldn't she? Carol tells her probably and Anya says then they should go. Carol tries to stop her by saying she isn't fully trained yet but Anya says that she'll learn more in that meeting then sitting in the back of a cab back to Brooklyn. Carol then asks Mr. Corazon if she is like that all the time? He tells her that maybe he should worry more about her then he should his own daughter. Briefing Room 3: Iron Man tries to tell Carol that Anya is not classified to be there but Carol says she told Anya she could come. She is in training and she wants to see what she is training for. Simon welcomes her aboard and Tony tells Carol that she is her responsibility. Carol says that she never said she wouldn't be. Tony introduces Agent Owen, their S.H.I.E.L.D. liaison for recruitment and training here at the tower. He has something important to tell them. Agent Owen says to put things short Arachne, Julia Carpenter has gone rogue. She was involved in Hobie Browns attempted escape the other evening and earlier tonight she joined up with Max Coleridge to defeat three armed squads in a matter of seconds. The last time they were seen was an hour ago, stealing a car outside a Laundromat in Hoboken, New Jersey. The car has been spotted in Pennsylvania and the green light has been given to take them down. Carol and Simon have been assigned to them in, there will be Capekiller backup but we don't want to risk any more men in a frontal assault. They have the powers; S.H.I.E.L.D. wants them to use them. Helicopter, above traffic: Carol tells Anya she must stay in her seat. She is here on observer status only. Anya tells her she got it the first ten times she told her. Good to know but right now, she needs to sit tight and watch replies Carol. Anya tells her that she has fought super people before. Evil wizards, a guy who could run two hundred miles and hour and even teamed up with Spiderman. This stuff isn't exactly new to her. Wonder Man looks down at the car with Julia and Max and comments that it looks to be going seventy miles and hour. Too fast for either on of them to just swoop down and grab it and way too much traffic to just take out the car. Carol suggests they fly down and give them a chance to stop, and it they don't, they grab it together and try to slow it down. Simon tells Carol that it's the best plan he's heard of so far. Carol informs the units to go to code Alabaster. In the car, Max tells Julia to drive faster. She asks why when she notices in the rear-vision mirror that Carol is right behind them. Carol flies up to Julia's window and tells her to pull over or she will pull them over. Julia instead uses the car to push Carol up against the barrier. Carol screams in pain and asks what the hell she is doing. The car then skids and Carol flies into another car, Simon holds on to the roof and then rips off the door on Max's side. Max uses his powers on Simon and he screams but then grabs Max and throws him out of the car. The Cape killers surround him and use stun guns to take him out. Carol gets up from behind a car and says to herself that if they're going to play dirty, then lets play dirty and flies off after Arachne. Carol flies up to the car and punches off a wheel. As the car flips over and as it does, Julia gets out and lands on a truck. Carol is struggling with the car because it was moving too fast and she couldn't get a proper grip. Simon flies up behind her to give her a hand and the take the car to a near by patch of grass. Simon tells Carol that he didn't see where she went but Carol tells him not to worry, they'll find her. She can't keep running forever. Review: This issue was all right. The art is great as always and the cover is beautiful. It seemed to focus more on Araņa and Arachne more then Ms Marvel and Wonder Man but they have issues that need to be addressed. When Arachne stole that guys clothes and was forced to wear a Dazzler World Tour t-shirt from '93. That was a total surprise to me. Its good to see that the rest of the Marvel 'verse hasn't forgotten dear old Dazz. Did I mention I loved the car chase at the end between Ms Marvel, Wonder Man, Arachne and the Shroud. I hope the Shroud doesn't go back to character limbo after this, its good to see old characters come back into the spotlight because from what I hear, he hasn't been in the spotlight for a good long while. I hope he somehow gets away from where ever they are keeping the captured heroes and he becomes a member of Omega Flight along with Arachne. Now Araņa, I didn't like how Araņa's father accepted the fact that she had superpowers and was a hero. It was too; I dunno how to describe it, forced? Her father seemed to get over it very quickly. It just doesn't sit right with me.
