Codename Etymology: Pronounced mōvā'ĭs [From French, "evil"]; Evil.
Powers & History: Mauvais has various mystical powers including teleportation, illusion casting, telekinesis and illusion casting. The man who became Mauvais was a Frenchman in the 18th Century who fought in the French-Indian War in the New World. He was also a cannibal, and somehow so greatly offended the Northern Gods that they cast a spell on him, preserving him in a lifeless frozen state for centuries while he was in a French prison.

Two hundred and fifty years later, Mauvais's cell/crypt was discovered by jailors from the superhuman facility known as The Cage that was built over the old prison. The two were looking for a way to surreptitiously kill Wolverine, who was an inmate at The Cage following his murdering of a Senator (while being controlled by the new Weapon X). Mauvais was awakened by the touch of one of the jailers, who he immediately ate. When told of Wolverine's powers, Mauvais decided to comply with the remaining jailer's plan.

Rebel, the guard, led Mauvais to Wolverine, who was bound to a chair, his powers negated by the prison's special technology. Mauvais took a chunk out of Logan's shoulder, then gouged out his eye. Delighted to find such a tasty meal (given Wolverine's healing factor), Mauvais promised to finish Logan off after ...

Weeks later, Mauvais recruited Bloodscream to his service, then had the vampire find and control Vermin, a being with control over the lower denizens of the animal kingdom. Bloodscream also began abducting homeless men from shelters for his and Mauvais's use. Unfortunately, Wolverine discovered his activity and thwarted the plan by cutting off Bloodscream's hands, eliminating his control over version. However, Logan did not discover Mauvais's role in this incident until later.

Mauvais's next move was to infiltrate the reality show "Stay Alive," which was being filmed in the Arctic. He disguised himself and his henchmen as doctors who came to treat a cast member for a seal bite. Upon arrival, Mauvais drained the life of the show's host and took his form. He then appeared on the show itself and slaughtered and ate the contestants.

Wolverine saw the event on TV and was guided to Mauvais by the Northern Gods. By this time Mauvais had erected a mystical barrier around himself, and Logan could not get through. Mauvais revealed that his plan was to get his revenge on the Northern Gods by attracting the Wendigo, then absorb its power by eating it. Empowered by the Wendigo, Mauvais would then be able to lock the gods out of Canada. Wolverine arrived to combat Mauvais, but could not stop him from becoming the Wendigo and was severely beaten. Alpha Flight arrived to help and together the heroes managed to weaken Mauvais enough to break down his barrier, at which point the Northern Gods swept Mauvais away to the dimension where the Great Beasts are incarcerated, presumably to have Mauvais tortured by them.
