Magus
Affiliation: Technarch
Status: Presumed destroyed
Relatives: Warlock (son, deceased)
Alternate-X Versions: None
Codename Etymology: Pronounced mā'gəs [From Greek, magos: "magician"]; A magician.
Powers & History: Like his son Warlock, Magus was a techno-organic member of the
Technarch, the race that would later spawn the Phalanx. Unlike Warlock, however,
Magus had no moral center, and had no compunctions about infecting entire worlds
with the Transmode Virus in order to satiate
himself. Magus, in fact the leader of his people, came to Earth to look for his
wayward son, and soon was engaged by Rogue, Colossus,
and Nightcrawler. The three X-Men
severly hurt Magus by having Nightcrawler teleport a section of one of his limbs
away, while Rogue tried to absorb some of his energy, and Colossus followed up
with heavy blows. Magus escaped, and eventually found his son, who was now a member
of the New Mutants. After a variety of trips through
Magik's stepping disks, taking them across both time
and space, the New Mutants found themselves halfway across the galaxy, with the
Starjammers and their old mentor, Professor
X, just as the Magus caught up to them. Magus began to tear up the planet
they were on, and Warlock realized he could no longer run from his destiny, which
was to kill his father and take his place. Through lots of teamwork, the kids
managed to weaken the Magus, but it was Warlock, physically combined with his
friend Cypher, who managed to subdue Magus for good.
Using Cypher's innate understanding of languages, and Warlock's techno-organic
interfacing capabilities, the pair infiltrated Magus' body and uploaded a virus
which reduced Magus to childhood and would keep him there for a long time, essentially
deactivating him. Recently, however, the Magus returned and once again threatened
the Earth, this time because of its Phalanx "infection," which he considered impure.
Fortunately for the Earth, Warlock II (essentially
a resurrected Warlock with some of Cypher's memories and personality), along with
Wolfsbane, Hope, Psi-Mon and the Psi-Cops were able
to defeat him, re-writing his code from the inside out.
* Not to be confused with the Magus who is the possible future self of the synthetic humanoid Adam Warlock.
