Powers & History: Control of the earth's magma and lava. Magma at first believed herself to be a citizen of Nova Roma, an outpost of the Roman Empire that had survived to this day in the Amazon rainforest. After her mother was sacrificed to the Black Priestess, Amara was sent by her father to live with the Indians in the jungle. She camoflauged her skin and hair color, and it was in this darkened form that she was captured by Cannonball after her band attacked the New Mutants. Amara's coloring soon washed off in a river, and she and the New Mutants were brought to Nova Roma. She was herded in with the slaves, as no one knew of her ancestry, and was then found by Selene, who cast her into a lava pit.

It was then that Amara learned of her mutant abilities, which allowed her to survive the lava and defeat Selene. "Amara" joined the New Mutants and was a core member until she fell in love with the Hellion known as Empath. She joined the Hellions to be with him, but shortly thereafter she found out that she was really Allison Crestmere, daughter of a British ambassador, and that the entire Nova Roma was a creation of Selene, who used it to keep people at a low technological and theological level, so they would worship and sustain her. Magma and Empath left the Hellions, and Allison now helps the survivors of Nova Roma readjust to life in the twentieth century. She is also involved with the search for her real parents.

Later, Magma was captured by the Upstarts for the Younghunt, but returned to her regular life when her captors were defeated. She was not seen again until her appearance in Chris Aaronson's New Hellions. He called her a "British exile," so it seems that she did not rebuild her old life as planned. How she came to join him is unknown. However, when Aaronson unleashed the Armageddon Man on the U.S., Magma did not leave with him, and helped X-Force shut down a nuclear reactor and stop the A-Man. She then disappeared, but was then found crucified by the Church of Humanity on the Xavier Institute grounds. Only a quick transfusion of Archangel's new healing-factor-laced blood saved her from certain death. However, Magma remained in a coma ever since she went to sleep the night after being rescued.

A few weeks later, students Josh Foley and Julian Keller found out about Amara and plotted to wake her up with Josh's healing abilities. Magma awoke and let out a power blast that nearly demolished the entire wing, then ran away. She joined up with the X-Men team in California and reunited with old friend Cannonball, then ran into Sunspot and Empath as well. Magma no longer thought of herself as Allison and was instead completely back to her Amara persona. How and why this change occurred, and which identity is the true one, is unknown. Amara helped the (X-Treme) X-Men fight and temporarily defeat Elias Bogan and his telepath, though she reduced the LA X-Corp HQ to slag while doing it.

Some time later, Amara returned to the Xavier Institute to attend Prizegiving Day, and agreed in principle to returning to the school to teach. She was then embroiled in an attack by the Blob, who was basically immune to her flames. After defeating the Blob, Amara seems to have left the school again, as right before M-Day she was traveling in South America with a flame-powered mutant named Antonio. The two mutants were cavorting inside a volcano when M-Day hit, and Antonio lost his powers and was consumed by the lava. Amara freaked and nearly destroyed the neighboring town until Empath came to calm her and bring her back to the Institute. Once there she was befriended by Outlaw, and also by Johnny Dee, who secretly made a voodoo-like homunculus of Amara based on a strand of her hair. Johnny used this "doll" to provoke Magma's powers at inopprtune moments, making her attack the O*N*E troops. Later, after Johnny got Leech to de-power the messianic Mr. M, he forced Magma to burn Mr. M to death with lava. Worst of all, Magma believes that Empath is to blame for her loss of control.
