Alright! Awesome start for an LS! First of all, the art is phenomenal. I love the mixed comic/painting/photo scenes most of all. It gives the book so much artistic depth. Very Spawn-like (the movie, I mean). Second, I really like Amanda as Magik II. Illyana fans, don't hate me, but I think Amanda could be even better at her role that her predecessor. I have a few reasons: 1) Amanda's not splitting her focus on another team. Her entire job is Mistress of Limbo. 2) Amanda is already an adult, with more experience and command of her magical abilities than Magik I ever had. The stuff that she did with using the Soulsword to trace magic symbols in the air was very cool. 3) She's using modern technology to her advantage. Very cool concept there, with the computer in our world set up to help her. I also loved what was done with Limbo as a location. Setting it as a bastion against the "Splinter Realms" is an interesting idea. Maybe we'll also find out how this Limbo relates to Immortus's "Limbo." The story itself was good, especially for a setup issue. Basically, Nightmare had a nightmare, which is not good, considering he's supposed to control bad dreams, not be subjected to them. Anyway, Amanda goes to visit Kurt after taking out a demon trying to invade Earth, but she gets summoned back to Limbo, and he's sucked along for the ride. Good way of pulling them together again. Question, though: Is he really a full priest now? Can someone who isn't yet wear the collar? Is he really going to be celibate for the rest of his life? Geez. Anyway, it's one of the great things of the whole Amanda as Magik thing that Kurt, a postulant priest, has an ex who's a demon-ruling witch. Then again, his mother was a witch too, but still, the dichotomy, especially as he helps to fight with demons, is very intriguing. How does he reconcile it? Finally, the ending was fantastic! Dormammu! I mean, I'm not a Dr. Strange fan, but the truth is there's a whole section of the MU which X-Fans ususally don't see that may be tapped for this book. In addition, I liked the fact that Amanda has her own new supporting cast, rather than see rehashes of Illyana's allies and enemies. It would be cool to have Belasco and S'ym show up eventually, but not as regulars. Whoa, I'm talking like this is a monthly, not an LS! Well, maybe I see so much potential for this book that deep down I wish it was. High praise for a company which hasn't had the best luck (or judgement) when it comes to putting out an LS in the past. With this and last year's Dark Seduction, maybe Marvel's back on track with the concept. Looking forward to next issue.
