Powers: Cain Marko grew up with his step-brother Charles Xavier, and always hated him, mostly because his father Kurt ignored Cain in favor of Charles (Kurt felt guilty over having caused Brian Xavier's death). In fact, one time when a fire broke out in Kurt's lab, he saved Charles before his even thought about going in to the flames to rescue Cain. When the boys were drafted to Korea, Cain and Charles stumbled on an ancient temple. Lured by greed and thoughts of glory, Cain found a red gem and picked it up. He became a human juggernaut. Protected by that Crimson Gem of Cyttorak, Juggernaut is the irresistable force. His super-strength, combined with his total invulnerability make him nearly unstoppable. His only weakness is psychic attacks, if his helmet is off. Otherwise, get out of the way! Juggernaut opposed the X-Men many times, hoping to a) get rich quick and/or b) finally defeat his hated step-brother, but the heroes usually managed to stop him. Often he worked with his best friend Black Tom Cassidy, whom he cares deeply for (mainly because he's his only friend).

Over time, Juggy has mellowed considerably, to the point where he jokes about the "losers" the X-Men recruit and doesn't really want to destroy them anymore, although sometimes his temper gets the best of him. Some time back, Cain was sent into the Ultraverse, where he led the ill-fated Exiles. Just before Onslaught, Juggernaut broke through some sort of shadow barrier and said that he needed to get to the X-Men. Then, suddenly, he landed in New York, having sailed from Canada after a hit by the then-mysterious Onslaught. He came to the X-Mansion, where he trashed up Bishop and Gambit a little, and then asked Phoenix to help him get Onslaught's identity out of his head (it had been blocked). Jean took him to the psi-shielded Z'nox chamber, and just as she got it, she realized that the door was open. Juggernaut ran out into the house, and ran into Onslaught himself (Xavier). Onslaught literally pulled the Crimson Gem out of Cain's body and put him inside it.

Inside the Gem, Cain journeyed through his part, and found out that he was the avatar of Cytorrak on Earth. Cytorrak wanted to use Cain as a host, but Cain, through sheer force of will, destroyed the animated statue representing the evil god and returned to Earth, stronger than ever, but less in control, and destined to destroy everything in his path. After OZT, he actually showed up at the Mansion with a lawyer and tried to weasel the team out of Xavier's money, given that the Prof was missing. He was ignored, because everyone was trying to save Cyclops's life, and got ticked off, but when he saw the ragged condition of the team, he left, saying that they'd fall apart within a few weeks anyway.

Later, Cain heard of a second gem in Korea, and went to get it, but fell into a trap laid by the Chejo-Do clan. They used the second gem to suck the power out of Juggy, leaving him a withered shadow of his former self. However, and Black Tom's request, Gambit, Storm and Shadowcat stole the gem back. Unfortunately, the second gem was imbued with the evil of Cytorrak, and Cain was possessed. He began a rampage that led him to actually break down the barriers between dimensions, and left our reality altogether. The X-Men were called in to stop him by the Oktid, the denizens of that plane, again at Black Tom's request. In reality, however, it was the Trion, the ruling "gods" of that dimension who were using their sequestered "dark side" to control Cain's body, hoping to get the X-Men to destroy him and rid themselves of their own evil. Xavier and Wolverine managed to enter Cain's mind, where they convinced him to re-take control of the power of the Juggernaut, which he did. He did not leave that dimension with the X-Men, but he somehow managed to get back to Earth to help Black Tom attack the kids of Generation X a few months ago.

Cain continued to work with Black Tom, taking a job from the crazed ex-soldier Ulysses to harass Cyclops, who then saved the villains when lysses betrayed them. A few months later, however, Juggernaut himself initiated an X-Men distress signal when Black Tom mutated and became a tree-like entity intent on draining the life energy of all he encountered. The X-Men responded, not knowing who had sent the signal, and attacked Juggy on instinct. Juggernaut defended himself with restraint, then pointed the X-Men in Tom's direction, but they were all trapped in Tom's web. As the X-Men battled to save all their lives, Juggernaut was confronted with the irony that his "best friend" was trying to kill him, while the students of his "hated step-brother" risked life and limb to save his life, even considering their past history. Having escaped Tom's clutches, Cain returned with the X-Men aboard the Blackbird, but Tom's tendrils reached out and grabbed him before they got far. Juggernaut fell into the ocean, but was saved by newly recruited student Sammy "Squidboy." Upon returning to the X-Mansion, Cain and Sammy bonded, and then Cain befriended Carter, the son of Havok's nurse Annie. After helping the X-Men against Maximus Lobo and his werewolves, Juggernaut formally asked Charles for permission to join the X-Men, and was accepted.

Unfortunately, Sammy's parents recalled him from the school, which upset him greatly. Alpha Flight came to pick up Sammy and tried to take all the children at the school, and Cain erupted in anger, though his weakened powers left him vulnerable to Sasquatch. Sammy's parents put a restraining order on Cain and he had no choice but to keep his temper. A few weeks later, fearing that Sammy would be beaten (as Cain was as a child) he asked Charles for permission to visit Sammy. Upon arriving at the Pare's house, Cain's presence freaked out the parents and they summoned Alpha Flight again.

Juggernaut was arrested by Canadian authorities put under house arrest with X-Men thanks to his attorney She-Hulk. The two also had a one night stand before a new Juggernaut attacked. They managed to defeat the new menace only to discover it was just a kid in a muscle suit, who was given power by Cytorrak in order to punish Juggernaut for betraying him. Returning to the X-Mansion, Cain became a full-time member of Havok's field team, and even got Cyclops to let him teach gym.

When the Brotherhood resurfaced later with Black Tom Cassidy he seemed to switch sides, but in truth in was only a ploy to infiltrate the gang. Recognizing Nocturne, he seemed to kill her, but in reality got her out of the way to protect her from being exposed. Unfortunately, Cain's presence broke Squidboy’s heart when he found out, and Cain was unable to stop him from being brutally murdered by Black Tom. In the end, after revealing his true alliagence he apparently went out a hero when he allowed himself to be sucked into Xorn II’s black hole in order to make sure Black Tom went inside the event horizon.

Juggernaut and Nocturne apparently ended up on Mojoworld, where they were sold to Mojo himself. Nocturne was able to possess Spiral and force her to open a portal to Earth, and they emerged in the Danger Room. However, Spiral was faking submission, and she kept the portal open to allow Mojo to follow Cain and TJ back to Earth. Along with the X-Men, Juggernaut was then reduced by Mojo to an X-Baby, and his guilt about Sammy's death came to the fore. Finally he realized that he must confront his own complicity in Sammy's death and deal with it, and he helped fight off Mojo and get everyone returned to normal.

Following M-Day, Juggernaut joined TJ, Nightcrawler, Marvel Girl III and Shadowcat when they traveled to England in the wake of Dazzler's apparent murder. They discovered an alternate-reality X-Men team and Juggernaut helped defeat them. Then he was arrested for destroying property during this and previous battles. She-Hulk came to represent him, but Wisdom pulled some strings and got Cain released scot-free. Wisdom used that leverage to recruit Juggernaut into his new Excalibur team. However, Juggernaut soon found his strength waning, and was no longer unstoppable at all. He did manage to talk Black Tom, who had been de-powered but had new technological abilities and was working with Black Air, to turn himself in. Meanwhile, Cain was pining for Dazzler, and TJ was slowly falling for Cain, creating a potentially explosive love triangle within the team. Later, Cain was severely beaten by the Wrecking Crew, who felt he was a traitor to all super-villains. Frustrated with his lack of power, Cain went searching for the Temple of Cytorrak, only to have his teammates confront him. After the team fought amongst themselves, Cain found the Gem, and secretly took it with him, unbeknownst to his teammates. However, he still opposed Cytorrak's plans for him, and his powers continued to weaken.

Later, when the Hulk attacked Professor X and the other "Illuminati" Cain asked Cytorrak to teleport him to Westchester in return for the ensuing battle and chaos. However, he was easily defeated by the Hulk, who was stronger than ever...
