Merryweather, Irene

Aliases: Margaret "Meg" Brundage, Chronicler
Alternate-X Versions: Possessed by Apocalypse (The End)
Codename Etymology: Pronounced mĕr'ē-wĕth'ər, ī'rēn [From Middle English, "happy weather"], [From Greek, "peace"];
Powers & History: None (human). Irene was a reporter for a tabloid paper when she received the assignment of digging up some dirt on Sebastian Shaw, Black King of the Hellfire Club's Inner Circle. Shaw found out and killed all of her colleagues. She was about to be murdered herself when Cable showed up and saved her life. She tagged along with Cable as he tried to keep the HC from waking the herald of Apocalypse, and is supposed to write his "story" as a testament for posterity. She has become Cable's freind and confidant, and has helped him get in touch with his humanity. She was in favor of his realtionship with Stacey the waitress, and opposes Blaquesmith's constant pushing Nathan to be a warrior and not care about individual people. During this time, Irene continued her search for information on the Hellfire Club, and managed to discover quite a bit about its roots both here and in England, though she was nearly killed again. While Irene basically managed to stay out of harm's way during Cable's exploits, recently she was possessed by Aentaros, one of the malevolent spirits called the Undying. She stabbed Blaquesmith severely, and Cable was forced to telekinetically give her a heart attack to make the demon release its hold on her. Fortunately, Cable had already telepathically alerted EMS, and an ambulance arrived in time to save Irene's life.

Irene's life did not get any less dangerous when Cable attracted the wrath of the Dark Sisterhood, a society of telepaths bent on world domination. In addition, Irene was herself contacted by one of the three "witches" who had been appearing to Cable, and was told that she was the "Chronicler," the key person who MUST record Cable's history for posterity, and that her work would be read by millions, and is eessential to the integrity of the timestream. The "witch," named Alecto, also posed some very interesting questions about Cable's past, causing Irene to do some deeper investigating of her subject. Eventually, Cable was forced to leave his safehouse, and sent Irene and Blaquesmith to another one. Unfortunately, they were driven off the road by Sisterhood cops, and only psi-pattern masking devices allowed Irene to survive. Irene then called a special number Cable had given her and was picked up by a secret group who faked her death and records and gave her a new lease on life. This life came with a price, though - a full change of identity, down to skin color, courtesy of an (implanted) image inducer. Irene became Meg Brundage, a black insurance investigator, and actually experienced racism first-hand, frustrating her, but allowing her to begin to understand what Cable goes through.

Two years later, well after the final defeat of the Dark Sisterhood, Irene had returned to her old life and skin color and landed a job at the Daily Bugle. Unfortunately, she kept trying to track down Cable, who had disappeared completely, often to the detriment of her work. Finally, she received a CD-ROM from Nathan, with a diary of sorts explaining what he'd been up to. Irene then spent time going through the diary and keeping it out of S.H.I.E.L.D. hands. How this episode fits into her life is unclear, as it supposedly took place in our past.

Recently, Irene joined Cable on his space station-turned-island paradise Providence, where she is one of his closest advisors. Interestingly, while she had never taken a romantic interest in Cable (contrary to Deadpool's constant jibes) she seemed to be very upset by Domino's "defection" to Cable's side and their renewed intimacy.
