Powers & History: Gamesmaster is an omnipath, a telepath so powerful that he can hear the thoughts of every being on the planet. However, he cannont block the thoughts out, so his head is constantly full of six billion voices. To alleviate this problem, Gamesmaster agreed to moderate Selene's Upstarts competition, in which young mutants would compete for power by killing other mutants, who were rated with point values. By focusing on the ambitious and powerful thoughts of the Upstarts, the Gamesmaster was able to somewhat drown out the rest of the world. After Selene was removed from the game by Fitzroy, Gamesmaster continued to monitor the competition, at times adding new players for certain events. The last event for the Upstart before they apparently disbanded was the Younghunt, where the targets were the surviving members of the Hellions and the New Mutants. Gamesmaster himself had to intervene to subdue the mutants and their teammates, but after a debate with Paige Guthrie (Husk), he let them all go. Paige challenged the Gamesmaster to stop trying to kill those mutants who were active now, and instead try to shape and influence the next generation. The Gamesmaster made another bid to control some X-Men when he trapped Joseph, Gambit and Rogue in a fantasy world where things seemed to be better than in reality. Only a ruse nearly causing their deaths allowed the mutants to break free.
