Rogue's power activates when she kissed a boy at a school dance. The prequel then deals with events after this as Rogue is taunted and bullied by other kids in her class, and she finds that she remembers her boyfriend Sean's karate and gymnastic skills. After a fight which ends up with three more kids being knocked out, the police arrive followed by Cyclops, Storm and Jean Grey. They attempt to apprehend Rogue, but she flees and gets picked up by a truck driver. Six weeks later in Virginia, Rogue has a confrontation with a drunk trucker who touches her and she winds up with his drunkeness and his truck driving ability, but she gets pulled over by the police. She's then apprehended by a cop working for the head of a chemical company who is connected to Senator Kelly and who is experimenting on mutants. Rogue eventually leads the other kids in a breakout, where it's revealed the company head is a mutant himself. Rogue then heads north in a boxcar with three of the escapees, while Magneto sends Sabretooth to sniff around the chemical plant.
It was in Canada that she ran into Wolverine, and then wound up at Xavier's school, when the X-Men saved them from Sabretooth. She soon became friends with Bobby Drake and, despite a crush on Logan, she began dating Bobby. She also became friends with John Allerdyce AKA Pyro. However, one night she surprised Logan out of a mightmare, and he stabbed her without looking, so she instinctively touched him, saving her own life by absorbing his healing factor. She was very upset by her actions, and Mystique made things worse by posing as Bobby and telling her to leave the Mansion. The X-Men came after her, but she was kidnapped by Magneto, who had her absorb his own powers to run the mutation machine he had constructed. After being saved by Logan, who again allowed her to take his power to heal herself, Rogue was left with a white streak in her hair. Before Logan woke up from a short coma, his feral nature overwhelmed her personality and she escaped onto the Mansion grounds, where she was finally subdued as her power wore off.
Just after Logan returned, Rogue had to contend with a commando raid on the mansion and going on the run with Logan, Bobby and John. After escaping the police, Rogue was then being sucked out of the X-Jet at altitude. Fortunately Nightcrawler saved her. Despite being forced to 'plane-sit' the X-Jet, Rogue managed to fly the plane, somewhat shakily, nearer to the base at Alkali Lake to pick up the X-Men ahead of the floodwaters. Rogue was made a full-fledged X-Man after the Alkali Lake battle and given a costume.
