Powers & History: Erik Lehnsherr, like his 616 counterpart is a Polish Jew who was imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp and can manipulate magnetic fields. Unlike his counterpart though, Magneto's powers first flared when he was seperated from his parents in the camp in 1944, pulling at the iron gates behind which they were locked until he was knocked unconscious by the Nazis. Erik survived the war, though his parents didn't. When the Red Army liberated the camp, Erik tried to kill the Nazi commandant by using his growing powers to control a Red Army soldier's rifle. Erik first travelled to America in 1946, believing America to be the land of peace and tolerance. Erik later travelled to Israel, where he met Charles Xavier and narrowly survived a car bomb. This underscored to Erik that mankind won't tolerate what is diferent. Despite this he returned to America with Xavier where the two collaborated to create the Cerebro mutant locator. Together they resuced a mutant boy named Henry (possibly Beast). They fell out when Erik attempted to kill the former camp commandant after he was captured in the US and was due to be extradited to Israel for crimes commited there and during the war.
Erik subsequently formed the Brotherhood of Mutants with the aim of overthrowing humanity's dominance of the planet in favour of the mutants. To that end, he constructed a mutation-generating machine and captured Rogue to have her absorb his power and use the machine to mutate all of the international delegates to a convention at Ellis Island (since the effort would have killed him). He was narrowly defeated by the X-Men, specifically Cyclops, who used his eyebeams to knock him out.
Magneto was then placed in a plastic prison (designed by Stryker's program) and visited regularly by Xavier. After Stryker used his mind-control serum to pry the secrets of Xavier's school and Cerebro from him, Magneto escaped from US custody with aid from Mystique, who injected a guard with a large amount of blood-borne iron. He then assisted the X-Men in infiltrating the Alkali Lake Compound, but betrayed the X-Men by rearranging the duplicate Cerebro there to kill all humans. He was narrowly stopped by the X-Men. Magneto also lured Pyro to his side, and escaped with him and Mystique. His current whereabouts are unknown.
