Scarlet Witch

Real Name: Wanda Maximoff
Origin: Somewhere in Eastern Europe
Affiliation: Brotherhood
Relatives: Erik (Magneto, father), Pietro (Quicksilver, brother)
Powers: Hex-casting abilities, possible limited magical abilities
Background: Twin sister to the infamous Brotherhood member known as Quicksilver, aka Pietro Maximoff, Scarlet Witch's full abilities remain a bit of a mystery. Thus far, it seems as though Wanda's major ability is to alter probabilities in order to make things come out the way she wants them. When Wanda was a young child, her mutant abilities just beginning to make themselves known, Magneto placed her in a mental ward, and left her there. Though for years she was treated by Professor X, her outrage at being institutionalized made it impossible for her to control her power, and she remained a danger to those around her. The slight gesture from her hands could level a building, so Xavier was unable to bring her to his Institute.

Because of this, when Mystique freed Wanda for the purpose of overthrowing Magneto as leader of the Brotherhood, Wanda gladly accepted the chance to take revenge against her father. Agatha Harkness has since been helping Wanda to control her anger and work on her mutant powers and spelling-casting abilities. In Scarlet Witch's first action with the Brotherhood, she delivered the first real defeat the X-Men had felt, and levelled the Bayville Mall in the process. While Wanda at least tolerates Pietro, as he was unable to do anything to stop Magneto from placing her into the mental institution, it is clear that she neither trusts nor cares for anyone or anything outside of her hatred for her father.

During the "Day of Reckoning" fiasco, Wanda took the advantage to attack her father and traitor brother. She used her hex-blast to weaken Quicksilver, and attempted to do the same to Magneto when she was interrupted by a Sentinel robot. While Scarlet Witch was interrupted by Professor Xavier and the Velocity, Magneto diverted two missiles aimed for her, hitting the Sentinel directly in the chest. The Sentinel exploded, crashing into Magneto and knocking Wanda off the building. Scarlet Witch was saved at the last moment by Nightcrawler, however they could not help Magneto. Toad and Scarlet Witch reviewed the news reels the next day, and saw that Quicksilver had run in at the final second, and saved Magneto.

Later, Scarlet Witch was captured by her father and had her memories altered by Mastermind, so that she would be loyal only to Magneto. Toad, assisted by Nightcrawler, came to her rescue of the girl, as he seems to have a deep crush on. When Wanda realized that Toad was more concerned about her than himself, she began to warm to him, though the two still have a long way to go before any kind of a relationship can be built. Whether or not the brainwashing will wear off remains to be seen. However, if it should, it is clear that Magneto would be in very deep trouble for even further confusing his daughter's tortured mind.

Soon after the apparent death of Magneto, a typical argument between Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch on a subway lead to a large wreck. In an attempt to save their own skins, the Brotherhood also saved many on the train, and were soon considered heroes. The Brotherhood, under the guidance of Quicksilver, began staging accidents and rescuing people. Though they portrayed mutants as good people, the X-Men still suspected they were behind the accidents, especially Cyclops and Jean. At the same time, Principal Kelly began his run for mayor of Bayville, on an anti-mutant platform. The Brotherhood attempted to strongarm him, but the X-Men ran them off. Kelly wasn't impressed, and vowed to continue his platform, and walked away from the X-Men. Afterwords, the Brotherhood staged and solved another accident, pinning it on the X-Men through Scarlet Witch's clever use of her powers. With the X-Men in jail, Quicksilver decided to stage one more, gigantic accident, which the Brotherhood could not control, and the X-Men were released to stop the devastation. Though they tried their best, they still needed Avalanche's help to stop the accident from doing too much damage, after which he promised they were out of the hero business, permanently.

After the rise of Apocalypse, Wanda again had to fight against Magneto and the rest of the Four Horsemen, eventually helping to defeat them and their master.
