Background: When Calvin was very young, his father put him through a series of genetic experiments which gave him the ability to mimic the abilities of mutants within his vicinity, although he did not know about it. Without warning, Calvin's father left, leaving him and his mother on their own. One day, while skipping class to skateboard, Calvin met Evan Daniels, aka Spyke of Professor Xavier's Institute for Gifted Youngsters. While skateboarding, Cal fell, and released a spike similar to Evan's from his arm to save himself. Evan arranged a meeting between Professor X and Cal, but before everyone could clear out of the room, he nearly trashed the Mansion with optic beams and telekinetic powers. Finally, Professor X got everyone out and Cal returned to normal. After some tests, however, the truth about Cal's powers' origins were discovered. When Professor X said that he had to consider whether or not to admit a non-mutant to the Institute, Cal was upset, and refused to join the school at all, feeling he didn't belong. He tried to convince Evan to come, but was rebuffed, so he left his new-found friend Spyke behind.
