"Day of Recovery"
Synopsis: Outside of the ruins of Xavier's Institute for Gifted Youngsters, the X-Men are faced off with the Brotherhood. Cyclops stands toe-to-toe with Mystique. Cyclops begins to explain how he'd seen the security replay of Mystique setting the mansion to self-destruct, and then changed herself to look like Xavier. The Brotherhood advances, and Mystique snaps around, telling Jean Grey not to probe her mind. Jean shakes her head, saying that Mystique is somehow preventing Jean from probing her. Cyclops advances, preparing to fire, and telling Mystique that she had better start unblocking, but Shadowcat grabs his arm and prevents him from attacking. Mystique threatens that unless the X-Men back off, they will never see Xavier again, and before the fight can go any further, all the mutants present have to flee from the advancing police and military who had followed them. The police tell everyone there to freeze. Iceman quickly turns to ice, and freezes a patch of ground, causing the cops standing there to slip. The mutants all scatter, doing their best to get away from the police, and sometimes having to use their powers defensively. Reinforcements are called in to help deal with the mutants. As they run, Scarlet Witch uses her powers to destroy the guns of some of the reinforcements, causing Toad to joke that she is, "Beautiful and bad." Jean is caught by the police, and placed in a squad car, which Nightcrawler teleports into and the two drive off. Shadowcat runs after them, and phases into the car. The police continue to try and apprehend the mutants, but they are simply outclassed. Iceman is holding his own, but jumps into the car with Nightcrawler and the others when they offer him a lift. Several police cars chase after them, and there is a blockade at the entrance. At the last minute, Jean causes the car to lift off the ground. The car flies into the sunset as Cyclops radios that everyone is to meet at Lookout Point that evening. On TV, reporters continue to comment on the events of that morning, debating whether the strange people are strange mutations or beings from other planets. Several of the X-Men are identified by name. However, one reporter says that Principal Edward Kelly is urging people to remain calm, and to find out more facts before jumping to wild conclusions, as does the President. In New York, Berzerker and most of the New Mutants go into the sewers. The rest of the X-Men and the Brotherhood gather at Lookout Point. Iceman freaks out, and nearly freezes Cyclops. Mystique explains that she had nothing to do with Magneto's plan, and begins saying how the events of that day prove that Xavier was wrong, and that they need new leadership. Jean asks Mystique what she wants, to which Mystique replies that she has lost a member of her team as well, and that she wants him back but doesn't know where to look. A man emerges from the bushes, explaining that he knows where the others are. Nightcrawler asks if there is anyone who doesn't know about the secret meeting. The man introduces himself as Nick Fury, agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Cyclops says it's some kind of super-CIA. Mystique threatens Fury that he had better leave, but several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents surround the mutants. Fury explains that it was only a precaution, and that if he wanted the mutants captured, they would be captured. He then gives the mutants the plans to the base where the others are being held, and explains that he can't have any involvement in the mission. When asked why he's doing this, he simply says he has his reasons, and the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents leave. Storm and Mystique clash over who should lead, but Jean explains that they have no choice but to follow Mystique, because she is the only one who knows where Xavier is. Storm backs down, and Mystique quips that it was very wise counsel. Mystique begins barking orders, and sends Toad and Scarlet Witch to find out if Magneto is still alive or not. She then says that everyone else will go to rescue the others, and that they'll need some transportation. In a secure military compound, a guard stands in front of the Velocity. Slowly, and silently the vehicle lifts off the ground, not even catching the attention of the guard. Outsided the fence, the X-Men stand watch as Jean levitates the Velocity to them, clearly having difficulty with the massive helicopter. The guard is called, and only then does he realize that the Velocity is missing. However, before anything can be done about it, the Velocity is too far out to be retrieved. Inside the cockpit, Mystique is giving Storm the coordinates. Only Iceman recognizes the location: Area 51. In New York, Scarlet Witch and Toad watch as the Sentinel is lifted from where it crashed. Beneath the giant robot is nothing but a crushed roof. Scarlet Witch says that Mystique was right about Magneto being alive. Toad comments that he feels for her, and it begins to become apparent that he has a crush on Scarlet Witch, though it doesn't seem to be reciprocated in the slightest degree. Toad points out a news van on the ground, and the two head for it. Inside the news van, a man sits at the monitors, and hears a knock. He goes to check, but his shadow is shown being yanked outside. Toad and Scarlet Witch enter, and begin reviewing the tape. Scarlet Witch realizes that Quicksilver saved their father, just before the Sentinel crashed on the old man. She overreacts, as usual, and the monitors explode, causing Toad to jump and scream. In the sewers, Berzerker leads the New Mutants until they reach an odd looking mutant with a raspy voice. The strange mutant asks what they're there for, and Berzerker explains that they're mutants looking for safe haven. The mutant replies that he knows that they're mutants, saying he always knows, and leads them to a place where he says it will be safe. At Area 51, a falcon flies into an open window. Moments later, a military man walks into the monitor room, and tells the man at the controls that the captain wishes to see him. The man whines, asking what he's done now, and leaves. The other man sits at the controls, and changes into Mystique, who begins searching for the fallen X-Men, as well as Blob. Outside, the lights on the fence go dim, and Mystique orders the X-Men and Avalanche into the compound. She then tells Storm to be ready, and Storm replies that Mystique should just make sure that everyone is safe. Inside, Blob is freed from his cocoon and placed inside a holding chamber. A general questions Wolverine who he works for, and where the robot came from, but Wolverine refuses to talk. Wolverine tries to free himself, but his chains are too solid. In the hallways, the X-Men are stealthily walking through, searching for their comrades. Iceman and Shadowcat are directed by Mystique to go to a control room. The controller walks in on Mystique, who kicks him in the jaw, knocking him unconcious. Shadowcat and Iceman phase into the room they've been directed to, but Mystique has yet to cut the motion sensors. Iceman creates and ice-bridge, and the two cross to the other side of the room, where Iceman cuts a wire, shutting down most of the security systems. He twirs the pliers in his hands, and accidently drops them, activating the motion sensors. Outside, Nightcrawler sighs as he says that the stealth part of the mission is over, as all around the base, military personnel activate. The X-Men are quickly surrounded, but begin fighting back, doing their best to only incapacitate their attackers, without hurting them too badly. Mystique finds them, and tells Cyclops, Jean, and Avalanche to hold the guards off, while she and Nightcrawler go to rescue the others. Inside the holding center, the guards are alerted. In all the confusion, Spyke is able to release a spike, freeing one of Wolverine's hands. With that, Wolverine frees himself, and holds off the army as Spyke begins to do the same for the other captured mutants. Soon, Beast, Blob, and Rogue are freed, and they begin trashing the place. Beast tosses the guards into Blob's up-ended cell, and then they place a heavy metal plate over the top, trapping the men inside. Nightcrawler and Mystique meet up with them, causing Wolverine to question why Mystique is there. Mystique replies, "He'll send you a memo!" and orders them all to run. In the hallway, Cyclops, Jean, and Avalanche appear to be holding their own against the guards, but it's clear that sooner or later, they'll be overrun. The freed mutants catch up to them, and Mystique tells them to run. Avalanche explains that there are more guards coming, but Mystique tells him to bury them. However, before he can actually do that, Jean uses her power to knock the guards away, safely behind the falling debris. The entire group runs, and is nearly free, until the exits begin automatically closing. Iceman points to a hatch in the ceiling, and they all begin climing upwards. Blob gets stuck in the hatch, and Shadowcat phases him through. Cyclops climbs the ladder, followed by the final member of the group, Mystique. Just as Mystique is about to get out, Cyclops slams a grate in over her, and demands to know where Xavier is. Mystique begins to threaten him, and says he doesn't have the heart to leave her there, but he proves her wrong and closes the hatch. Avalanche confronts him about it, but Jean prevents the two from fighting, and then calls for Storm to pick them up. Storm flies the Velocity into place, and picks up all of the mutants, but they're under heavy fire. The quickly flee the scene. Missile launchers take aim on the helicopter, but they're quickly destroy by lightning bolts thanks to Storm. A stealth fighter chases after the Velocity, but its missiles are easily stopped by Cyclops and Iceman. Cops surround the Brotherhood's house. Toad manages to get back out with a bag of clothes. Avalanche reaches in, pulling out a crimson dress, and yells at Toad for only getting clothes for Scarlet Witch. Toad comments that it doesn't matter what the three of them were, as long as Wanda looks good, and then begins to give Scarlet Witch fashion tips. She is clearly not amused. From Lookout Point, the X-Men stare at their now police-occupied former residence. Shadowcat asks what's now, with all that's happened. Cyclops blames himself, saying that they've lost the Professor because of his gamble. Wolverine says that if Cyclops hadn't done it, he would have, and that they'll get Xavier back. Storm says that the more important issue now is to convince the world that they're the good guys, before it's too late. Review: Overall, a very good episode. Full of action, while managing to incoporate a good amount of story. Most fans will recognize the mutant in the sewer as Caliban, indicating that the Morlocks will be involved in the story somewhere along the line, as confirmed by ComicsContinuum.com a few months back. So, what did happen to Xavier? At the beginning of the episode, it shows flashbacks from "HeX Factor," particularly where Mystique walked back into the hospital after delivering Wanda to Agatha Harkness. Perhaps they're saying that Mystique kidnapped Xavier there, or perhaps they're simply trying to make us think that. Either way, it's very difficult to tell. Hopefully, next week's show, "The Stuff of Heroes," will help to explain this further.
