"Adrift"

Synopsis & Review by SGuthrie19:
Synopsis: In Hawaii, Scott watches as storm clouds gather overhead and his brother Alex Masters surfs out on the incredible waves that result. Scott tells him that this will be his last run, as he's just received a weather report, while Alex goes through a pipeline, and is suddenly knocked off his board. He communicates to him through the video and audio feed on Scott's laptop, and Alex tells him to come out and get him so he won't be embarrassed by harbor patrol having to pick him up. Scott borrows a speedboat from the boathouse, and then goes out to find his brother. He's able to get closer when Alex sends up a "flare" via his mutant power. Scott realizes that he's losing Alex's signal, and tries to send a message using the radio, but there's so much static that he can't get through.

At the mansion, Kitty talks to Lance on the phone, and he wants her to come with him to the mall. Her conversation is interrupted by the appearance of the supremely buff Nightcrawler, who has apparently been messing with his image inducer. When he tries to fix it, he grosses out Evan by making himself fat as Blob, and then scares Jean half to death when his head becomes twice as big as she watches the news report about the happenings in Hawaii.

Back at sea, Scott tries the radio again, and someone finally picks up his report. Alex tries firing another flare, and Scott is able to get close enough to where Alex can get to the edge of the boat, despite his being thrown off his board. Scott pulls him in as a chopper keeps looking for them not too far away. The weather continues to worsen, but Scott keeps going in the boat.

At the Institute again, Bobby fights a losing snowball battle against Magma, Jubilee, and Berzerker. Beast steps in, joining in the fray and trying to "teach" them how to have a real snowball fight, and Evan tells Jean to come in, where she sees a news report about Scott and Alex, who are still lost.

The brothers are now drifting, as the engine dies, the boat totally out of gas. A huge wave begins to crash down on them, which Scott parts with his optic blast. Fortunately, the chopper thinks it's a flare, and just after they get knocked overboard and their ship sinks, and Alex tells Scott he filed to have his last name changed back, the helicopter shows up directly above them. They lower a life-preserver harness down, and Scott sends Alex up first. Suddenly, a blast of lightning hits the chopper, and though Scott manages to deflect it, and the pilots get out, Alex is pulled under since he's still harnessed. Scott dives underwater and barely manages to get him out in time.

The X-Jet is en route, piloted by the Professor and Storm as Jean spots funnel clouds almost touching the water. The pilots are picked up by a ship, and they tell the rescue workers aboard that they couldn't find the boys. One of the funnels hits the water, and Scott and Alex are unable to outswim it, as it pulls them into its deadly maw and up the funnel. Storm holds open a rift in the funnel as Jean telekinetically lifts Scott and Alex painstakingly to the ship's loading ramp. It strains both Ororo's and Jean's powers, but the rescue is successful, and the Professor takes off just in the nick of time. Scott says that they have to stick together and he's sure that his brother will return the favor of saving his life someday.

At the mansion, the "new mutants" are wiped out after the fight, and Beast learns that teaching mutants will require much different skills. Later, Jean and Scott talk as she feeds him in his bed in the medical ward, and the Professor returns Kurt his "repaired" image inducer. But when Kurt goes to visit Scott, he finds that Charles has made his hologram a female Kurt, and the group is finally able to laugh again.

Review: Awesome! Although it seemed like the stereotypical show where things get continually worse before they get better, it was worth it to see both of the Summers brothers working together again, and for once fighting the forces of nature instead of the threat of evil mutants. It's also cool to note that Jean really does care for Scott, and I hope that they continue to grow closer through each episode. More nice cameo appearances of some of the new students as well! A great show, to be certain!
