Background: Samuel Guthrie is just a typical down-home country boy, attempting to fit in with the city-kids of the New Mutants. Despite this, Cannonball is just happy to be in the group, even assisted Iceman in driving and piloting when some members of the group went on a "Joyride" in both the X-Jet and Battle Van, only to be caught when they brought the jet back. As a result, he was suspended and put on cleaning duty with the others.

During the "Day of Reckoning" fiasco, while the New Mutants were trapped inside the Mansion, Cannonball attempted to free them by flying into the sealed steel doors, nearly knocking himself out each time, until they were saved at the last minute by Cyclops.

The next day, after running from the police, Berzerker led most of the New Mutants, except for Iceman, into the Morlock tunnels. They have since returned to the X-Men.
