Background: Berzerker is a quiet sort, content to let some of the other mutants take the lead in hijinks and classes. At one point it seemed that perhaps he was not as bright as his classmates, but recently he showed initiative and poise under fire by leading the New Mutants who had escaped the Mansion's destruction into the New York sewer tunnels. There Berzerker negotiated with the mutant-sensing Caliban for sanctuary and help in finding the missing Professor X. It was clear at this point that Ray was once a "Morlock" himself, and must have left the tunnels to join the Xavier Institute. Later, when Spyke began to lose control of his mutation, Ray saw Callisto follow Evan as he ran away. Worried that the X-Men would follow and construe his former comrades as hostile, Berzerker went down to the tunnels and tried to warn Callisto, encountering the shape-shifting Scaleface in the process. Callisto sent Ray away and he returned to the Institute.
