Background: Lance Alvers grew up in a fairly unstable home, and when his mutancy revealed itself, his parents were less than thrilled. Due to this, he felt no qualms about leaving them behind, turning to a life of petty-crimes just to survive. While spraying graffitti on lockers in school, he ran into Kitty Pryde, who literally fell through the door of a locker. After a brief squabble between the two when he attempted to get Kitty to help him steal test codes, she joined the X-Men, and he was easy prey for the awaiting Mystique.

Mystique made Lance the leader of the Brotherhood of Mutants, a group of wayward young mutants whom she and Magneto planned to use to conquer the world. Through a series of small skirmishes, Avalanche has proven himself to be the most level-headed of the Brotherhood. After Mystique disappeared, Lance revealed his (and his teammates') mutancy to the entire Bayville High at a football game, forcing the X-Men to reveal themselves as well. Only Professor X's telepathic memory wipe prevented Avalanche's plan from exposing the X-Men to the public.

Soon afterwards, Lance left the directionless Brotherhood and joined the X-Men. This was due in large part to his romantic interest with his previous enemy Shadowcat. However, the other X-Men were suspicious of Lance, especially after a number of team vehicles were found trashed. Though Lance and Kitty eventually found the New Mutants who were "Joyriding," and Lance's name was cleared, he left the X-Men.

Avalanche returned to the Brotherhood, not completely sure of where he stood in the scheme of things, but that he was sure he didn't belong in what he considered to be the overly-strict School for Gifted Youngsters. Avalanche's fate may be a mystery, but whatever comes his way, he is ready to send his own brand of seismic waves at it, no matter the consequences.
