Part of the Civil War X-Over

Synopsis & Review by RachelGrey:
Synopsis: Six Months Ago: An unknown object hurtles through North America airspace. All investigations reveal that the object is only a few feet in size so it won’t cause any harm, and it will most likely burn up on re-entry. Also, if it doesn’t burn up, it will land in an empty area in Oklahoma so it isn’t a big threat. Upon re-entry, the object intersected with a small private plane and crashed into Earth…

The Present: Reed Richards comes home and turns on the TV when he is greeted by his wife, Sue Richards. Sue asks how the meeting went and a reluctant Reed remembers his final meeting with the Illuminati and answers that some bad things are coming when he is interrupted by the TV, which shows Tony Stark and Peter Parker after their meeting with Washington and discussing the Super Human Registration Act. Sue dismisses it as election-year posturing, but Reed begins to explain when they are interrupted again. This time by an Emergency Distress Frequency Reed gave to S.H.I.E.L.D. They are contacted by General William Ray, who needs their help on something very important. Reed and Sue wake up Johnny and Ben the group head to Oklahoma…

In Oklahoma, a research facility and its soldiers are under attack…by Doombots! The Fantastic Four arrive and battle the army of Doombots. Reed notices that the Doombots are only skirmishing on the perimeter and not heading towards the research facility. Reed asks if he can see a tactical display of the battle, but is informed that the facility has lost all its systems. Reed then realizes what’s going on and looks up to see an incoming missile. Mr. Fantastic and The Invisible Woman use their powers to protect the soldiers but the research facility and everything in it has been reduced to a crater. A voice corrects that statement as Mr. Fantastic turns around to see the real Dr. Doom! He’s back from Hell. Doom says what was initially in the crater is still there. It fell to Earth six months ago. It’s the mighty Hammer of Thor and it belongs to Victor von Doom.

Review: Well, that was boring. The only somewhat interesting part of this whole issue is Doom’s return…although I’m sure no one believed he would be gone forever. I mean, even Reed doesn’t act too shocked to see him. Most of this issue is a pretty mundane fight with the Doombots. The jokes are stale and the action is nothing special. The beginning Civil War part isn’t even that interesting because nothing is really explained about it. You can already see Sue isn’t too fond of the idea. Even the art is mediocre. McKone’s art isn’t really bad, but there’s nothing special to it. It isn’t very emotional or dynamic and it doesn’t really help the story. But nothing seems weird or funky looking so he gets points for that. There really isn’t too much to this issue. You could not pick up this issue and not miss anything. Hopefully next issue will be better. Yuck.
