Erik the Red is a costume, a persona adopted by different people at different times. His purpose is usually to throw the X-Men off balance, so that they cannot defend themselves properly.
Erik the Red I was actually a costume worn by Cyclops to infiltrate Mesmero's camp after he activated Lorna Dane's powers on behalf of the Magneto robot. As Erik the Red, Cyclops wielded energy blasts from his hands, perhaps somehow redirected from his eyes. Where he procured the costume is unknown. He was able to take over control of the mutant gang for a short time, and began to convice Lorna (who was brainwashed into being the "Queen of the Mutants") that Mesmero was not to be trusted.
Eric the Red II
Real Name: Davan Shakari
Affiliation: Shiar Empire (under D'ken)
Status: Deceased (X-Treme)
Alternate-X Versions: Eric the Red (Ages of Apocalypse)
Codename Etymology: Pronounced ĕr'ĭk thə rĕd [From Norse, "eternal ruler"]; Historical Name: Viking explorer and founder of Greenland c. 1000.
Powers & History: Flight, combined with super-strength. These abilities
were the product of his suit, which also allowed him to fire energy blasts and was very advanced by Earth standards. Shakari was an agent of D'ken's who was sent to Earth by the mad Emperor to survey it for colonization. He built a hidden complex inside a mountain somewhere in North America, which was populated by slaves who waited upon him and visiting Shi'ar dignitaries. One of these slaves was the human Gabriel, who later became the X-Man Vulcan.
Later, Shakari was ordered to stop Charles Xavier from aiding Lilandra. Lilandra had been linked to Xavier when he used his psi-powers to defeat the Z'nox, and escaped the death sentence her brother imposed on her to try and reach Xavier in the hopes that he could stop D'ken from unleashing "The End of All That Is," the neutron galaxy at the heart of the M'Kraan Crystal. For his first move, "Eric" brainwashed Havok and Polaris into attacking their former teammates as they were seeing Xavier off on his vacation. The X-Men beat them back, and the trio took off. Later, Shakari cut a deal with Black Tom and Juggernaut, who attacked the X-Men (whom Eric correctly saw as Xavier's protectors) when they came to Cassidy Keep (Banshee's ancestral home) on a break. Finally, Shakari convinced Firelord, the former herald of Galactus, that he was a simple explorer who was being attacked by the X-Men. Firelord confronted Xavier and the team, and although he was ultimately stonewalled by Phoenix, Shakari managed to capture Lilandra, who by this time had arrived on Earth, and take her through a quickly-constructed Stargate to the planet of the Crystal. The X-Men followed, and during the battle, Shakari disappeared. He apparently returned to Earth, where he eventually became aware of the existence of X-Treme, rumored son of D'Ken. Shakari tried to manipulate the boy into attacking Genis-Vell, but instead enraged him, breaking the conditioning and causing X-Treme to destroy Eric the Red's ship in battle.
Erik the Red III, who put Gambit on trial for allowing the Marauders to enter the Morlock tunnels and commence the Mutant Massacre, was revealed to be Magneto himself.
