Cortez

Full Name: Fabian Cortez
Affiliation: Acolytes
Previous Affiliations: Upstarts
Status: Deceased ? Magneto
Powers: Cortez can amplify any other mutant's power, usually to the point where his victim burns out. He may also have some control over his own power's energy field, possibly being able to constrict it around a foe. He also used his power to appear to heal Magneto, but was in reality killing him. Cortez set up the destruction of Asteroid M, and took over the leadership of the Acolytes until Magnus' return, when he was ousted. After Magneto's mind was wiped, Cortez kidnapped Luna, daughter of Quicksilver and grand-daughter of Magneto, and using her as a shield, claimed to be speaking for Magneto, and incited the mutants of Genosha to riot. The X-Men and the Avengers came to stop him but in the end it was Exodus who stopped Cortez, nearly killing him. He returned, seemingly with a change of heart and attitude, and tried to help Joseph claim Magneto's place as leader of the Acolytes, but this turned into another ploy for power. Cortez then led a group of Acolytes against the X-Men, but fled when he began to abuse them and they were saved by their foes. When Magneto was given control of Genosha by the U.N., however, he came to Cortez and offered him a chance to redeem himself. Cortez became one of Magnus's advisors, and used his power to help Magneto recover from his aborted attempt to shut down the Earth's magnetosphere. However, Cortez soon betrayed Magneto to the U.N., because Magnus was fighting to gain control of Carrion Cove, where technology existed that would have restored him to full power. Cortez allowed himself to be augmented so that he could in turn augment renegade Acolytes to fight Magneto's forces. Strangely, he powered down at the end of the battle, allowing the Genoshan forces to take Carrion Cove. He may have run out of power. Unfortunately for Cortez, Magneto eventually did re-power himself, and when Cortez tried to run, he was magnetically lifted, thrown 50 miles and smashed into the ground by his former leader.
