Real Name: Jonathon StarsmoreJono is very sensitive to issues of personal appearance, and thinks that he's pretty much a monster, which isn't true by far. Upon arriving in the United States to join Generation X, Chamber became a target for the energy-hungry Emplate. The mutants drove Emplate off, and Jono settled into life at the Academy. He had a relationship with Husk, but it didn't work out so well, mostly because Jono couldn't get past his own disfigurement and wouldn't give Paige credit for being able to. They eventually reconciled to being friends while being hunted by Prime Sentinels during Operation: Zero Tolerance. At the Academy, Jono lived in the basement, and liked to play guitar and listen to records.
Coinciding with the dissolution of the Massachussetts Academy, Chamber was promoted and invited to join the X-Men. Rather than accept, he returned home to England, where he attracted the attention of pop sensation Sugar Kane after protecting her from paparazzi. Jono and Sugar spent a few weeks together as an "item," as the X-Men came to London to find out what had happened to him. While the X-Men got involved with saving the UK Morlocks from Mr. Clean, Jono learned first-hand about life in the public eye and what rumor-mongering does to people when it was suggested that Sugar was pregnant with his child. Driven by pressure from her manager and by bad press, Sugar dumped Jono, who finally realized that his place was with the X-Men, pursuing Xavier's dream.
After a short time, however, Chamber still felt out of place at the Institute, and got permission to investigate a supposed anti-mutant massacre at Empire State University. While there, he met a number of mutants who were let into ESU on a type of "affirmative action" PR move. Some just tried to blend in, while others in the Magnetic North group espoused Magneto's philosophies. Chamber investigated the murders and was nearly killed himself, and eventually discovered that the leader of the tolerance group lost control of his powers and destroyed himself and his friends in a tragic explosion.
Chamber returned to Xavier's and tried to reconcile with Husk, but she was more interested in Archangel at the time. Not long afterwards, he volunteered to infiltrate the Weapon X Program to find out about the secret Neverland facility. A bar fight was staged, and Jono was arrested, whereupon he was recruited into Weapon X by Director Jackson. Amazingly, the Weapon X scientists were somehow able to contain Jono's energy and rebuild his entire torso, giving him a real mouth and voice for the first time in years. In return, Jono was sent on a mission to kill John Sublime, leader of the U-Men, who had somehow survived his initial encounter with the X-Men. After getting the OK from Wolverine, his "handler," Jono accompanied Weapon X on the mission and killed Sublime (whose grave was later found empty). Jono then infiltrated Neverland, and disappeared along with the entire Weapon X Program.
Someone claiming to be Jono recently appeared in Los Angeles, saying he unfortunately blew his face off again in a drunken brawl in Los Angeles. There he came to the attention of former heroes Turbo and Phil Urich (Green Goblin III) who recruited him into the ex-superhero team Excelsior. However, this Chamber was revealed to be Geoffrey Wilder of the Pride (a younger version brought from the past) using a magical illusion spell, and the real Jono's fate was unknown until after M-Day he re-appeared. It seems that just prior to M-Day he was still working as a mole in the Weapon X Program, and may have been brainwashed. When M-Day hit he was involved in a massive battle between the various factions of the program. Jono was de-powered, and his reconstructive surgery was blown off in a final outburst, leaving him with a giant hole in his chest and no jaw, but with no energy to fill it. How Jono survived is unknown, but the X-Men were able to stabilize him and brought him to a hospital where he could be treated more effectively.
Jono was eventually moved back to England, where a therapist named Dr. Hartley often came to speak with him and tried to bolster his spirits. Jono was able to communicate via a type-in speaker box. However, when Pete Wisdom came to see Jono, hoping to help him and potentially recruit him into MI-13 and Excalibur, Hartley kidnaped Jono and plugged him into a machine that regenerated his missing parts. Hartley turned out to be Frederick Slade, leader of the new Clan Akkaba, a group of descendants of Apocalypse organized by Ozymandias. Jono was also a descendant, and was less than thrilled to discover that he now looked like Apocalypse and his Clan Akkaba tattoo had returned with his chest. Slade revealed that Apocalypse's blood had restored Jono, but it would take more time to bring his powers back. Jono wasn't interested, and started for the door. Apocalypse appeared, but let Jono leave for unknown reasons. Outside, Excalibur confronted Jono, but he told them to leave him alone and he went off on his own. Later, Wisdom discovered that Jono was indeed repowered, and near the Omega level...
