Cerebra's Files
Southern, Candy
Full Name: Candace Southern
Affiliation: Phalanx
Status: Deceased (Hodge)
Powers: None (human). However, Candy fell in love with Warren Worthington
(Angel) in her late teens, which brought her into
contact with the X-Men, and unfortunately, their foes.
Soon after Candy learned of Warren's powers (and by extension, the fact that the
rest of his classmates were mutants), she stormed into the X-Mansion
and demanded (to a robot sentry) to see Professor X.
She needed to find Warren to warn him that his uncle Burt (the villainous Dazzler
I and Warren's father's murderer) was about to marry Warren's mother. Unfortunately,
Warren was missing after an adventure in the Savage
Land, so Candy insisted that she go with Cyclops
and Marvel Girl to find him. The rescue squad was
itself captured when they tracked Warren's signature to a boat, and then turned
over to Blob, Mastermind
and Unus. When the X-Men and their captors were subdued
by mutants that had been cheated by the ex-Factor Three members, Candy managed
to help out by knocking out the evil Kreuger, allowing her and the X-Men to escape.
Candy was Warren's girlfriend for a number of years, and weathered some stormy
times, including times when she though he was cheating on her with Jean, the loss
of Warren's wings and his transformation into Death I.
Tragically, shortly after Warren broke his brainwashing, Candy was captured by
Cameron Hodge, leader of The
Right, an anti-mutant militia. Hodge hated Warren, and set up a trap with
Candy as the bait. Archangel sped to her rescue, but he was too late, and Hodge
pull the plug on the machine tied to Candy's life support and she died. However,
the fanatic humans who developed and then became the Phalanx
got a hold of her body and first scanned her memories of the X-Men and then used
her to test one of their first Transmode Viruses.
Months later, Candy broke free, confused and with a large memory gap. She made
her way to the Colorado house she had shared with Warren, just as he and Jean
were arriving there on a break for superheroing. Warren was shocked to see her,
and Candy forgave him for not being able to save her. Unfortunately, her early-stage
Phalanx body was unstable, and when Hodge, also a Phalanx now, came to get her,
Candy began to change as well. Realizing that she and Hodge were linked, Candy
opted to destroy herself to keep Hodge from assimilating her friends.
