"The Hero Hunter"
by Fabian Nicieza and Staz Johnson

Part of the Civil War X-Over

Synopsis & Review by Scurifer Illuminarei. Thanks!
Synopsis: As the title suggests this C&D ties in with events in other series which begins with the recap of a recap of another comic. It starts by recounting the American Civil WarTM (Wade’s suddenly started TM everything) and then Spiderman’s public demasking. Meanwhile Wade has taken up the job of hunting down Superheroes who don’t conform with the latest Superhuman registration act and has decided to hunt down the Great Lake Avengers (apparently they renamed themselves Great Lake Champions when no one was looking, seriously they sound like soccer players).

Wade as usually can’t shut up and now he’s confusing thinking with talking (or maybe the whole Marvel universe went telepathic when no one was looking) and thinks that they haven’t registered when they already did of course that doesn’t stop him from trying to kick some more super tushy. He survives being suffocated by Big Bertha's flab by copping a feel then blowing himself through a window with a grenade. Wade then gets his rear handed to him by Squirrel Girl and strung up like a piñata only to get hired by the real boys in suits to hunt down supers.

After more foreshadowing with Cable, Wade heads off and Cable meets up with Captain America. Nate thinks/knows things will turn out for the worse if he didn’t do something, but he's not ready to join Cap full-time. He does offer sanctuary on Providence, but Cap refuses to quit and run. Cable tells him that this fight is probably lost and he has to plan for the bigger war. To make matters more interesting Cap's group of superheroes have even changed their normal identities completely and disappeared. However, Cable shows Cap that he already knows their new identities, so how long until the government does. Strangely, he projects this information in some sort of hologram, which DP, from the roof across the street, is able to read. Wade eventually tracks down Daredevil and after more insult sword-fighting he finds that several members of the Avengers have teamed up with Young Avengers for God knows what, well other than beating the crap out of Wade.

Review: What is with Wade’s taste in women? First he says he likes extra old women now he’s into transvestite Blobs (no offense to fat chicks). Not that anything about him is sane or normal. Being mostly ignorant of the rest of the Marvel universe I’m not going to comment on the state of things but why does Captain America’s new normal look look strangely Nazi-esque? And what does Wade mean by they’re not really who they are? Did the Young Avengers steal the Old Avengers' laundry?

I have to say it’s an interesting change to have the supers change their normal identities rather than their super aliases. It makes it oddly realistic in the same way you might expect science to try and fit in a Dungeons and Dragons gaming session so again I won’t comment.

Frankly I prefer the early artists to the latest batch of folks but I’m at least glad Fabian hasn’t moved on yet.
