Synopsis & Review by HulkX. Thanks!
Synopsis: Wade Wilson is sitting alone in his apartment watching television for what appears to be about two days straight. Finally the phone rings. His potential client, called the One World Church wants to pay him a lot of money to do a job in France. After assuring him he wouldn’t be going to a country the US is at war with, he agrees and shows up in Orleans. He’s picked up by two creepy culty bluey people. As always, Deadpool makes fun of them. He meets Anton Kruch, their Prime Minister, who shows DP around the facilities, including the top secret Ministry of Insinuation (That means spies, not people who suggest nasty things about people.)
Apparently, a company named Sunic has made a synthetic virus with “grave consequences for mankind” The One World Church wants it so they can use it for good. DP is kinda curious as to how they’ll do it, but not enough to ask any questions after seeing a briefcase full of cash.
In Germany, a jerky German science guy wants to test something called the façade on a human subject. Little do they know, Cable is listening in on their thoughts and words. Room service shows up and Cable convinces the bellboy (who has the mutant power to emit CO2 when he’s nervous) to go to X-Corp and learn to use his powers wisely. He then calls an old pal at the Daily Bugle (by old pal, I mean Irene Merryweather) and asks he to dig up some info on Sunic. She asks if he is causing trouble. He says “I don’t start trouble, I end it” in true Cable fashion.
Not too much later, DP is breaking into Sunic. Guards aren’t sure quite what to do because there is a breach on the other side as well. That would be Cable. They meet conveniently, on the last page. DP is mocking, Cable is jacked. Violence will be had here next month.
HulkX's Review: Words cannot describe how much I enjoyed this issue. Unfortunately, it is a written review, so I guess I’ll have to invent some. Like superexcellatious. And fantasticalanamo. Some quick backstory on myself. When I was just a young grasshopper, circa 1991, I did not read X-titles religiously. I was a huge Silver Surfer fan, and bigger Transformers fan. I had friends who read X-Men so I kind of kept track of what was going on. Then one day, a friend gave me a comic and told me to keep it. It was X-Force 15 featuring Cable vs. Deadpool in a fight to the finish. I read it about 30 times and picked up the next issue which was part of the X-Cutioner’s Song. I was hooked. So I credit these two characters with my x-obsession.
My only worry was that Nicieza would overlook all the great things that have been done with these characters since he stopped writing them. Gail Simone’s Deadpool and Robert Weinberg’s Cable are two of my favorite comic runs of all time. Apparently my fears were unfounded. The Udon team has made it so that it feels Deadpool hasn’t been gone for a few months since we last saw him in Agent X. Or at least we know where he was, watching PTI and the Daily Show among other things. I love how a lazy villain is one of the most intriguing characters. Cable’s moved on from his Soldier-X or Weapon X days but still traversing the globe looking for hotspots and “fixing trouble”. He still has Irene helping him out, and I just about spit out my drink when he told the hotel worker “Tell Xavier Cable sent you, watch his upper lip tighten.” This man knows his place in the universe and doesn’t care, but also realizes the place of others.
I don’t think I need to mention Deadpool’s comedy in this issue. It’s smart, timely, and over the top as always. I won’t cite specifics, because you need to read it for yourself. Plain and simple: you need this issue, and you need to start collecting this title. I could probably find something wrong to complain about… wait I can’t. I would never complain about France while we are at war with them. Oh we’re not? Germany either? We will be, oh we will be. This issue gets an A+ in my book.
