Real Name: Fred J. DukesThe Blob was first located by the X-Men when he was an attraction at a carnival and was actually invited to join the team after some testing at the X-Mansion. However, he was not the type to be a team player, and in his arrogance thought that he could defeat the young mutants. Professor X was forced to wipe the Blob's memory of his encounter with the X-Men, and the massive mutant returned to the carnie. Later, the Blob's memory was jarred and he led an attack on the Mansion, and was approached by Magneto to join the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Under subliminal commands from Lucifer, he teamed up with Unus to impersonate the X-Men while robbing banks. All of these schemes were foiled, and the Blob was eventually captured by Larry Trask's Sentinels and put in a containment unit. Following the X-Men's defeat of the Sentinels, Blob teamed with Mastermind and Unus in running a fake carnival and other assorted schemes. When the mutant leader Krueger found Avia, Angel III and later Cyclops, Marvel Girl and Candy Southern, Blob had Mastermind use his powers to fake up the cash with which the villains bought the captured heroes. Then Blob tried to convince Jean that he was Cyclops using Mastermind's illusions, hoping to have his way with her, but that failed, as did the entire plan, once the X-Men figured out that Mastermind was involved. Then Krueger showed up for revenge and his energy-draining powers left Blob helpless and they were all arrested thanks to the X-Men.
Later, Blob joined the Brotherhood, and was part of the villainous team that was reduced to infancy by Mutant Alpha. How he returned to adulthood is unknown, but he was next seen in the aforementioned breakout from prison, a move planned by Mystique, who gave Blob the technique he used to break free, earning his loyalty to her new Brotherhood. Blob stayed with the Botherhood through its transition into Freedom Force, but remained the same old bully he always was. After Freedom Force's dissolution, he joined Toad's version of the Brotherhood, and then laid low for a time after the team was defeated by X=Force and then by the X-Men. Still later, Blob was apprently recruited by Onslaught, who taught him the mass-controlling, quasi-shapeshifting aspects of his powers. Blob later got some help in controlling those powers from Sledge, for which Blob owed him some favors. Months afterwards, Blob was among the mutants comprising the second incarnation of the Brotherhood of Mutants, who were on a mission to find Professor X so that he could protect them from the rampages of the sentient Cerebro. Finally, Blob was re-recruited into the Brotherhood by Mystique to take down X-51, the Machine Man. Later, he was involved in the group's failed attempt to kill Senator Kelly.
Following that mission, Blob was incarcerated, but was sprung months later by the Multiple Men, who brought him into Banshee's X-Corps. Blob resisted Banshee at first, but a well-placed sonic scream put him in his place. Thanks to Mastermind III's telepathy, his villainous impulses were controlled, and he functioned as the group's strong man until Mystique released Mastermind. Blob then attacked his "heroic" teammates and was finally put down by Stacy X's pheromone control. It is unknown whether he was arrested or detained, but months later, after he was "left out" of a Brotherhood attack on the X-Men, he appeared in a therapy session with a Dr. Garrison, who advised him to be true to himself. Garrison, himself a mutant with pheromone powers, apparently induced Blob to attack the X-Mansion. Needless to say, Blob was defeated, mostly by the students, who managed to put him to sleep with telepathy and pheromones.

M-Day de-powered Blob, who had been sleeping in a hotel when the change occurred. Unfortunately, his skin (and appetite) did not shrink when his blubber did, causing his skin to hang off his body in loose folds. After being interviewed by Sally Floyd, Blob then got involved with the X-Cell, a group of depowered mutants who believed the government caused their loss of powers. This brought him into conflict with X-Factor, who knew the truth about M-Day but had yet to tell anyone.
