Angel's mutation was pinpointed by Cerebra upon her manifestation, and Wolverine was sent to invite her to the Institute. At the time, Angel was being abused by her mother's boyfriend, and she burst out of the house as her wings erupted. Wolverine found her just in time for them to be accosted by U-Men from the Third Species. Whom Wolverine took apart with his customary lethality. Angel traveled to the Institute with Logan, proving to be more of a pain with her abrasive adolescent personality as Wolverine ever was.
At the Institute, Angel kept pretty much to herself, and disdained the other "pretty" mutants. Though she is by no means ugly, Angel sees her mutation as an affliction, and claims that she would have her wings removed if she could afford it. However, when Cassandra Nova attacked the school, Angel was "recruited" by the Stepford Cuckoos because they felt she knew how to fight dirty. Together with Beak, she broke into the mansion and stole a tissue sample that was later used to defeat Cassandra.
Angel has carefully cultivated the image of a rude, crude and obnoxious teen at the Institute, yet for all her apparent dislike of the school, she remains a student there. Still, her actions are sometimes appalling, as in the case where she kissed Beak during flying class, sending him into ecstasy, but it turned out to only have been a dare, and she was paid for it by her mildly disgusted and titillated classmates.
Later, though, Angel continued to pursue Beak, and though their amorous adventures were interrupted by the U-Men, Angel got pregnant as a result. Worse, with the departure of the Stepford Cuckoos, Angel became Emma Frost's pet project. When Emma was seemingly killed and Beak confessed unconvincingly, it seemed clear that Angel was protecting her young. In fact, Angel did fire the bullet that shattered Emma, but she was under Esme's mental control at the time.
When "Xorn" revealed himself to be Magneto, Angel joined his new Brotherhood. However, when Beak refused to comply with Magneto's plans for human extermination and was beaten, Angel also turned on Magneto. After Magneto's defeat, Angel returned to Xavier's and she and Beak were given a cottage to live in with their kids. Unfortunately, Beak became "unstuck in time" and Angel was left alone.
| Angel was a rich supermodel, with a penthouse apartment and other luxuries. When the Exiles (of whom Beak was a member) came to Earth 616 to find her however, she obviously didn't recognize them. Worse, she was soon possessed by Mutant X (Proteus) and her life force drained away slowly as he fought the Exiles in her body. Fortunately, Proteus left Angel's body and Blink was able to heal her using a regenerative serum she had brought from another reality. This healed/restored Angel's mind as well. |
Following the House of M, Angel (and Beak), along with some of her kids, were de-powered, though some of her offspring remained mutants. They apparently moved out of the Institute to New York City, and were eventually contacted by Night Thrasher (II?) after the passing of the SHRA. Night Thrasher offered Angel a technologically advanced suit that could create temperature effects and recruited her into his New Warriors team. With the new codename Tempest, Angel could now generate heat from her right arm and cold from her left. In addition, the suit allowed her to fly using a wind effect.
